Should I Be Cleaning My Oven With Ammonia?

Is it safe to clean my oven with ammonia? I know it's a good degreaser, but want to check if it's ok to use to clean the inside and what the best way to use it is. Thanks for your help!

Ammonia is fine to use on your oven. A good way to use it is to pour ammonia into a glass bowl and place it in the oven overnight. DO NOT TURN THE OVEN ON! Let the ammonia sit overnight with the oven door closed. The next day remoe the ammonia and scrub any debris on the oven walls and floor with a plastic scrubby and then wipe with a hot wet cloth. Rinse and wipe down the walls well.

Yep as far as my research goes ammonia is fine to use in an oven but to be absolutely certain you would need to check with the manufacturer. Also manufacturer websites usually have lots and lots of helpful tips and even products to best take care of their products.

  • You can , but I clean it with vinegar:

    I clean mine with ammonia.

Heat to 200 and shut it off, put a bowl of ammonia in it and shut the oven door. Leave it shut overnight.

Next day, open the windows for fresh air and remove the bowl of ammonia. Wipe your oven clean with a rag that is wet.

The ammonia can be reused for other cleaning.

I would use vinegar it isn't toxic like ammonia and especially since you are cooking in an area unless you rinse it really well

I would never use ammonia to clean as it is so caustic and can damage your lungs and nasal passages.

I use a scrubbing paste to clean mine with a stiff copper scrubber.

  • I only use vinegar, I can't deal with the smell of ammonia and the vinegar does an excellent job of cleaning.

  • If you don't have a self-clean setting on the oven, you can do as Janice suggested. Take the racks out, put them in a garbage bag with some ammonia and set them outside overnight. The grime will wipe right off.

Yes you can but be aware ammonia can be nasty so proper ventilation is needed.

  • Ammonia is a fantastic cleaner for electric ovens, but it also does a fantastic job on gas ovens! The only catch is that ammonia fumes can catch fire, so if you have a gas oven, you'll need to take two extra precautions to prevent any possible fires.
