How to protect rugs from heavy furniture?

by Sarah

I'd love to hear your experiences with protecting rugs from heavy furniture. What methods have you tried, and how well did they work?

Are furniture pads or rug underlays worth the investment? Do they actually prevent damage to rugs?

If you've discovered any DIY alternatives or creative solutions for safeguarding rugs from heavy objects, please share!

Also, how often do you recommend moving heavy furniture to prevent long-term rug damage?

TIA

Furniture pads work. Strips of carpet under no feet furniture. Carpet squares under furniture feet. I usually cut from carpet remnants. Never had to move furniture except for rearranging a room or carpet cleaning.. Furniture only crushes the carpet nap than can easily be raised back.

Hi Sarah, heavy furniture does crush the carpet fibers of course but as far as damage, it doesn't really do permanent damage to the carpet. You can purchase plastic or rubber like "casters" for between the furniture and carpet. Some of the casters have teeth-like protrusions that help to keep the carpet from being flattened. Carpet pads are advertised as making your carpet last longer and is installed beneath wall to wall carpeting and it makes the carpet feel more luxurious. I haven't ever used pads under my area rugs but using one should help the area rug stay in place better. Sometimes the padding is taken to too much of an extreme and makes the carpet on top difficult for some people to walk on. I'd stay away from that!

  • The furniture will crush the fibers but that's is easily remedied with an ice cube. Put the ice cube in the dented area and let it melt. Blot the water up with a towel and the lift the fibers with your fingers.

I've never seen long term or permanent damage. After moving, you can put an ice cube on indentions which is help to bring the fibers back to original shape.

I do however use the "mover" pads underneath the bed posts to help distribute the weight.

You can buy Caster cups or Piano cups etc for heavy furniture. Better not to have the furniture on the carpets if you are going to worry. My heavy furniture is only moved to Spring clean and then put back in place. Maybe by lighter weight stuff in future ?????

I use mover pads under the legs to prevent the "pitting" caused by the weight of heavy furniture. Use the ice cube method to bring back the pile of the carpet once you've moved the furniture, nothing should be damaged.

If you have extra carpet scraps cut those just slightly smaller then the couch and sit back on those. They will absorb or take most of the indentations caused by the couch. If you don't have any scrap carpet go to amazon and check out their carpet movers. I got some for my couch that sit up off the ground.

  • I’d try those furniture feet/pads that have the plastic spikes on them. Ultimately the carpet won’t be damaged per se, just temporarily smushed which can be undone.

  • Rug pads are made to shield your rug from large pieces of furniture. They are constructed from a gentle substance that won't harm your rug. Rug pads also stop slippage, helping your rug stay put.

Hi Sarah: I've used squares of left over carpeting under each leg. They match the existing carpet so you don't notice them. And, as an aside, if you have a square about 4x4, once you wash your windows, house or car, wipe with the carpet square and it will take away any streaks or dull marks! :)
