How can I get rid of flies in my garage?

That has to be an awful problem. Here's some suggestions:

Flies hate these smells and stay away from them, so people use these smells to repel flies from their garage. For example, flies hate the smell of eucalyptus, cloves, citronella, lavender, white vinegar, and basil.

Store things that attract flies in airtight containers

Flies like to eat some strange things. If flies are coming into your garage to eat whatever you are storing in there, keep these items in airtight containers

Remove standing water and liquids from the garage

Some flies, especially drain flies, come into your garage if there is standing or stagnant water in there. This includes water standing in drain pipes or buckets, or rainwater that has pooled inside the garage doors.

When drain flies find standing water and a humid or moist environment, they lay eggs and breed very quickly. What starts out as one fly leads to hundreds of flies in a few short weeks.

To get rid of flies in your garage, remove any standing water and take steps to make sure that water doesn’t stand there again.

Fog your garage

If you aren’t winning and there is a heavy fly infestation in your garage, or maggots, you might want to consider fogging the room.

How to fog your garage to kill flies and maggots:

1. Buy fog spray, such as the one that comes in an easy-to-use aerosol can.
2. Close all the windows and doors in your garage.
3. Spray the product into the air in short blasts around the room. There is a long pipe on the can so you can spray the product directly into cracks or crevices where flies might be hiding.
4. Leave the garage immediately, closing the door behind you.
5. After a few hours, go inside and open all the windows and doors to let in fresh air. The product does have a strong smell, so you might want to put an electric fan in the garage to help circulate the air and get the smell out.
6. Now clean up all the dead flies.

Remove and/or clean whatever they are attracted to - do you keep your trash cans in the garage?

Find what is attracting them. Anything that is rotting, a dead decomposing creature, garbage cans. Fogging the garage would be an alternative.

Plan when you can seal off your garage for a day and "bomb" it with some of those foggers. This could take a lot of prep, depending on what you have in your garage because you want to protect some items.

Hanging fly strips will catch a great deal of them but make sure you put them somewhere a bit out of the way so you don't run into them. You can also place ultraviolet light traps. I've read the flypaper traps should be place 1-10" strip per 1,000 cubic feet.

Eucalyptus oil on a cloth hung near entrances will help to deter them. Other things they don't like are mint, fresh orange peel, and the smell of pepper. You can do a homemade pepper spray of pepper and water and spritz. Citronella candles or other products with that scent should help to keep them at bay as well.

Hi Danielle, hope this helps you out. Flies are attracted to buildings by air currents and odors. Oftentimes, they will enter garages when the garage door is open. Eliminate the food sources that attract flies and other critters. If you keep garbage cans in the garage, make sure their lids are tight-fitting. Sealing gaps in the walls or windows may also make it harder for flies to breach your garage. Replace any worn weather stripping and look for small holes around window and door frames. Try to keep the garage doors closed whenever you're not actively moving in and out.

Try planting marigolds or strong-smelling herbs such as lavender, basil or mint near the doors and windows; flies are naturally repelled by these plants. Make a DIY fly repellent spray with vinegar and essential oils, or with cayenne pepper and water. Spray the fly repellent around windows and doorways to keep flies away from these areas.

As disgusting as they are, the hanging fly strips/traps work well, but as others have mentioned the best remedy is to find out what is attracting them to the area and get rid of that first!

Make sure your trash cans have lids tightly closed on them and I use fly strips that hang from the ceiling in several areas and that gets rid of them I also use them on my back deck near the door

I would use a bug fogger. Make sure you do not have dog food or cat food stored in the garage.

We use All Natural Pest Control and they only use Rescur Outdoor Fly Traps. All you need to do is add water and hang them up. We put them outside under the patio area (covered with roof).

Like that I don't nave to touch bait or flies and the flies can get in but not out.

But you will need to figure out where or how they are getting into the garage and fix that first.

Thanks everyone, I have my garbage cans behind the garage but close to the garage window. I replaced the one garbage can lid and the fly problems seems to have stopped

Hey there, Danielle! Flies should be lured in by the fruit or sugar and drown. Sticky fly strips or electrified bug zappers may also work to kill flies and other flying common garage bugs. In addition to traps, you may want to use a fly swatter and/or spray designed for flying insects to immediately kill flies you encounter in the garage.

Flies are attracted to buildings by air currents and odors. They can enter garages when the garage door is open. House flies can be found resting on nearly any surface including on walls, floors, window sills and other various objects found in the garage.

Now, here's a bit of a curveball. I had a similar persistence issue with clothing moths once, and you won't believe it – I found success with a heat treatment for clothing moths. I wonder if it could work for flies too. The idea is to heat up the affected area to zap those stubborn pests. Might be worth looking into.
