Hi Alison, What is the fireplace surround and hearth material. is it painted brick? You could
have tiled over that entire space and it would have blended into the wall. Not sure why you just tiled with the multi colored mosaics above the mantle on the wall space. It's not too late you can still tile over that painted fireplace. also if you would use a paint that is in harmony with the tile color rather than the minty green contrast it would also blend into the wall. Add glass doors to the firebox ( the black hole) this will not only finish off the face of the fireplace but also insulate it and you will not loose heat up the chimney. The island would be more attractive if the cabinet base was painted like the china cabinet color and a new solid surface or granite top.
