  • A somewhat before photo. We'd already removed the balusters. 2
  • We removed all the posts replacing them with 2x4s and 4x4s in the two outside corners. Adding two Victorian style PVC screen doors into the Gentleman's Parlor.
  • Painted the framing and later the wood screen door with white exterior deck paint.
  • Cut and screwed on all the ScreenTight base. The black stuff where the screen is secured using standard screen spline.
  • Close up of empty base.
  • Close up after screen is installed.
  • My wonderful, though bandaged hubby, installing the cap. 1
  • Tapping the cap in with a rubber mallet.

Our Sun Porch using the ScreenTight System.

Though Spring is more than a month away the warmer weather we've had and the garden posts that have been popping up in the last week have me thinking it was a good time to post about ...»
screened in/sun porches. Funny that before I get all the photos loaded it starts to snow! It's 41 degrees here, but it's snowing like crazy. Wasn't in the forecast either.

You may have noticed that my dear hubby has a finger bandaged in a couple of the pictures. Just a reminder to never ever stretch your arms to either side of you to hold wood in place while you're using a framing nailer. Or any nailer for that matter. The thing double shot and a humongous nail went straight through his finger, bone and all. Major ouch and a trip to an Omaha hospital emergency room. The nurse and female doctor had to call in a male doctor to remove it. Hubby watched. I didn't, but did take a photo of it with my cell phone without managing to look at it. Don't worry, I didn't post that picture.

Thank you Home Spot. We do get mosquitoes, so it's nice to have a place to sit at night ...»
without that worry. Some years are worse than others as I'm sure that's the case most places. We're thinking of adding an outdoor carpet this year to keep the crawly bugs out too.

  • Original "special purchase" from HoDe before we broke ground on our home. Fell in love with them the second I saw them.
  • Floor after remake with darker coordinating tiles from L's. 2
  • Pretty much how the room looks now with a few changes to what's on the dresser.

Lessons learned.... The hard way.

Always buy at least 10% more tile than you need. Although in this case I'm glad we didn't because we wound up with what I think is a better looking floor than the original. But generally ...»
you really want to buy extra. We were novices when we purchased the originals.

Also, never talk your spouse into using another product than the one he's had luck with in the past just to get a job done sooner. Though it seemed to work just fine at the time, it wasn't long before one of the tiles cracked.

After hubby carefully removed all the tiles we took one with us and headed to HoDe and L's. We were very lucky to find a marble tile that coordinated with the originals since the original tile was no longer available.

Once home I scanned both tiles and used the Paint program to play around with patterns. The one you see on the right won. #lessonlearned

I found that out when we had our kitchen counters installed Sondra. ...»
I was shocked! I had to argue with the installer to get him to leave the cutouts from the sink and cooktop. He kept insisting they belonged to the company he worked for. Since hubby and I were the contractors for our home I knew exactly how much we ordered, how much it cost per square foot and how much we paid. When I told him that, doing the math for him, he wasn't sure what to say.

I asked him what they did with the cut outs and he had the gall to tell me they made cutting boards and sold them. Nice scam they had going there. Though I'm generally very easy to get along with, that really ticked me off, so I told him if he took them I'd call the police and report him as steeling while working in our home and give them the license plate of the vehicle he was driving. He left the cutouts.

Anyone know, for sure, the legalities of the Fair Use law?

I'm wanting to start a blog and would love to name it using a brand name product that is no longer manufactured, but not sure if it's name is still under copyright. (EDITED to add that ...»
this would be more of a Trademark issue since it's the name of a product.) I've already researched online to no avail. The name has been used decades ago, for something other than a blog ofcourse, but I don't know the details of that use. I planned on calling our family lawyer since he's been more than happy to answer a legal question in the past (without cost since we do use him for legal matters when needed) but then realized I have Hometalk at my finger tips and others might benefit from what I find out. So does anyone have legal knowledge that knows the answer? I'd really appreciate it.

Thank you Karen. It will happen, just not sure when. I have another name that I'll probably ...»
use, but I really wanted to use the other name.
