Hey Hometalkers, here's a question for ya.

A lot of folks focus on gutter cleaning this time of year. Most want to do less of it and are considering gutter guards. Question is, are they worth the cost?

Whether you clean your gutters yourself, or invest in one of the many types of gutter guards, one thing is certain: cleaning your gutters is a good idea. Besides allowing water to overflow in a heavy rain, there are a dozen or more severe home defects that can be caused by blocked gutters, including flooded basements and cracked foundations (see list here: http://www.moneypit.com/article/gutter-clean...)

Do-it-yourself gutter cleaning is simple enough, but it can be a dangerous job for the untrained weekend warrior. In the alternative, there are many types of gutter guard systems on the market to choose from, and all of them offer some sort of protection for your gutter at different costs. ...»

For starters, hardware stores and home centers sell simple plastic or metal screens that cost as little as $1 per foot. But premium gutter guards are also available. These can cost as much as $25 per foot, including labor and materials, and generally are only available through an authorized dealer.

So are gutter guards really worth it? Like most home improvement adventures, we think it comes down to cost and convenience. While premium gutters guards can be costly, most are effective and a bargain when you add in the cost of any emergency room visits necessitated when adding your own personal spin on the season known as Fall!

Do you have gutter guards on your house? If so, we'd love to hear what kind you have and whether they really work!

I just got in from cleaning someones gutters in Summit NJ today. Took me over five hours. They had gutter guards installed a few years ago. And the type they had installed were not inexpensive. They were screwed into the gutter and consisted of metal bars sort of like you would see on the BBQ grill. The larger leaves had been prevented from falling into the gutter, but all the small stuff fell through. There must have been two inches of a muddy mess. Hose would not touch it. Had to hand ...»
scrape two stories worth of gutters in some areas with a 38' ladder.

So sure I am for them, but they must be a type that does not allow any debris through or at least easy to removed and put back if the time comes and the gutter needs to cleaned.

I am considering purchasing gutter guards because cleaning the gutters are the only yard work that I actually pay someone else to do because I cannot afford to get hurt falling off a 36 foot ladder. I pay approximately $80 twice a year so it may pay to get them installed (at least on the top floor). Looking forward to your feedback on this!

I purchased gutter guards a year or so ago. Haven't had any problems yet. They seem to be working well.

I get to take a lot of failed gutter guard products to the dump. Have not yet seen one that lasts more than three years or is worth having

Kevin - plastic guards like yours were installed with my last gutter replacement. I dunno what trees you have around but the little "wormy" things that dropped from my surrounding pines rolled into the gap between the curved part and the edge of the gutter....and clogged it up within a year. No water would fall into the gutter so I had to have the guard removed.

I use stiff aluminum mesh I get from guttersupply.com to cover my gutters now. Haven't had any issues in two years (knock wood.....).

I tried a number of gutter guards (not the whole house at a time). I do have a lot of pine trees and other messy trees. The problem wasn't so much the trees but the angles of the house like a L or other odd turn.

I finally broke down and tried the simple gutter brush. I've had it about 3 years & it keeps the debris from clogging the 6" gutters. Yes we have to clean it about one a year by removing the ...»

brush and shaking it and then putting it back. It isn't perfect but the gutters work without clogging up and pouring out of the top of the gutter.

I just had my gutters cleaned & found that after 2 years there was no problem with the leaves or pine needles. The cleaning was the roofing stuff they had to remove. No matter what you install it is expensive to have them cleaned. My home is 2500 sq feet & it took him almost 4 hours to do the job. I have to say he did a good job.

I see this comment may be a bit late but as we have a gutter busines, I thought I'd share There are many leaf guards on the market today. The best we have found is called Leaf Relief. We usually only charge about $7/ft for it. It is a nearly solid flat piece with small holes in it. We have no complaints with this product.

We have gutter guards on our homes! Crazy right? Holly, most of our customers (contractors) have converted from the product that you stated. They have said that their customers (the homeowner) don't appreciate the maintenance associated with that product. ~Ben N.

Raindrop Gutter Guard Systems I think you clarified the issue. It is not only the cost to buy and install these things but the on going cost to make them do the job you paid for.
