Impossible window panes

Kjhawkins
by Kjhawkins
I have rented the same house for 14 years and have given up on convincing the landlord that the windows are so unsightly that you can not see out of them. They appear to be double-paned and someone tried at one time to "seal" them with some sort of brown sticky stuff that runs down the pane when the windows get hot. I can partially clean this glue type material with a razor blade, however looking for any ideas for a solution to get the windows at least partially "clean." I am unemployed and cannot replace the windows myself. Otherwise, I maintain a spotless house, and it looks as though I am too lazy to clean the windows. Any ideas would be appreciated.

It looks like your double glaze panels have failed, hence misted between the panes., you can buy a Static Cling Window Film and disguise it. The product is on Amazon and no doubt ebay, it comes on a roll with full instructions. The name of this film is d-c-fix window film and comes in a variety of pattern's. It is really easy to install to the windows and looks really nice. Hope this helps....it would get on my nerves as well...let me know how you get on.

I think that using the window film is the only solution as well. However many prints are available for example if you like stained glass.etc.Worth the try.

Call the maker of your window or just call Anderson or Pella and ask them how you can fix them. The razor may have scratched them badly and there will be no fixing.

Can you get a picture without the blinds? It might help readers to give you a solution.

You can also get the window film at Home Depot. They even have ones that look like stained glass. The film runs less than $20 a roll. I used it on a window that was 12 feet off the floor and arched and impossible to put a blind on and got lots of compliments. People thought it was real glass.

Window film is the only thing you can do since they can't be cleaned. They are double windows and the yuck that you see is inbetween the glass panes and it is permanent. If you can't have them replaced then covering them is the only thing you can do. Home Depot has a large selection of different window film choices and a roll cost about $24. The choices range from colored patterns to plain frosted patterns. You can go online to the Home Depot website to get an idea of what they carry but if you have a Home Depot close you can save shipping charges.

P.S. this window film is super easy to apply and comes off without damaging the glass. I've added a few examples of window film available.

I believe it looks like condensation between the glass. You have to have new glass put in for sure, there is know way to fix it otherwise. Maybe hang a stained glass panel in front of the window it still lets the light in and it is pretty to look at.

If the substance between the panes is mold then your landlord needs to replace the windows for your safety. I have seen these taken apart and yours look like the moldy kind.
    • @Donna Christensen-Henry I totallyagree with Donna. I too had water between some of my windowpanes due to having 3Mwindow film installed on the glass and the glass actually cracking/breaking afteryears of the film being covered on the glass and I recently had the glassreplaced. Because the glass had cracked/broken either from sprinklers or rainwater getting in between the 2 pane window glass and over time of not gettingthe glass replaced mold did grow in between the glass and it is totally a health issue and your landlord should pay tohave the glass replaced. It is selfish of the landlord not to replace theglass. Try writing a letter stressing the "health issues" rather thanthe look of the windows and hopefully it will get your landlord to do somethingquickly. Good luck! Karen

FYI,,,those are double pane windows and have lost the gas between the panes. DO NOT use window films as the sun will heat the glass up and the film and cause it to break into millions of pieces. I suggest your landlord do his due diligence and replace the window for maintenance purposes,,I was in the window business for 30+ years. Good luck.

@Patty is right. Secondly, if there is condensation or other substances, window film may not adhere to the wet parts. I have some, and there is one corner that always comes up.

Thanks to all of the kind folks offering suggestions for my unsightly windows. I believe that the route I will take is to contact a glass manufacturer. The ideas for the velum are good ones, but since I can partially see through the windows as they are, I'm afraid the obscurity of the covering might make the rooms claustrophobic. Also, I have used the hanging stained glass idea on two of my kitchen windows already, which are visible from the den and dining areas where I have a total of six 8' windows that all have the same issue. I'm afraid I would have the home looking like a church or place of worship with additional stained glass. Meanwhile, I'll hope for the best that my landlord will eventually "see the light!" Thanks to all.
