Here's a video via Plaid Enterprises, the makers of the most commonly used decoupage glue, Mod Podge. Though this is putting paper on wood, it's pretty much the same for any surface. If you let me know what you are putting on what I can help you with that too.

Try going on utube for the step by step illustration.
  • I would follow Becky's link! For my projects, I keep it pretty simple...1. Sand the surface of the item. 2. Paint on the decoupage medium3. Place your design/cover/paper4. Let dry5. Top coat with decoupage medium

@Thank you Em. Your five steps are perfect. That's just how I do it too unless I'm working on a non porous surface like glass. Then you use the reverse technique which is the same but for working on the back of the glass, therefore you place the paper images facing the back side of the piece.

I have an easy way to decoupage if you are working on a flat surface and it helps avoid bubbles. I apply a layer of Mod Podge or whatever medium you are using to the surface you will,be decoupaging on. Let dry. Lay your picture, poster, napkin, or fabric on the dried ModPodge and then cover with a piece of aluminum foil or parchment paper. Iron over that with a your iron set on medium and NO STEAM. Run the iron all, over the surface, let cool. When cool apply a coat of mod Podge, let dry and then repeat the iron step and let cool. After that I apply a couple coats of a water based polucrylic. Attached is a vanity that I decoupaged the drawers using napkins and the iron method.

Hi Susan I'm from the UK although live between Ireland & Spain - PVA glue is the same - white liquid but dries clear - hope this helps 😀
  • I have a ton of DIY decoupage projects and they are all step by step. https://www.exquisitelyunremarkable.com/search?q=decoupage
