Insects
Where did they come from? What are they?
It poured cats and dogs the day before. No one was home when this happened.

Janet Pizaro on Sep 13, 2015They look like sting bugs. This is the time of year the bugs come out. Vacuum them up instead of trying to kill them. Make sure you seals any cracks around the perimeter of the house. Also if you don't mind chemicals I suggest you spray all around as well.Helpful Reply

Marilyn Tolhuizen on Sep 13, 2015Or you could just let them move on through. When I lived in Norfolk I would get a swarm of these guys every year. They came in the front and went out the back. Didn't take long. Now in Indiana they start on one side of my garage door and move to the other side. Takes about a day.Helpful Reply

Vera Wamback on Sep 14, 2015Wow, that's quite interesting. It never happened to me, and it rains quite a lot in London. I agree with Marilyn, though - it seems like a natural event that needs to take its course and perhaps pest control shouldn't be involved yet.Helpful Reply

Kari on Sep 20, 2015I can't tell from the picture but the shear volume of them makes it sound like Cluster Flies. In my house they gather in hundreds on a sunny window towards the end of the day when the weather starts to cool off at night and mostly die within a day. They are very slow moving when on a window so are very easy to vacuum up live. These are not a filth fly but are abundant when you have a large earthworm population as I do on my 160 acre farm of hay fields.. Here is a fact sheet from Gov't of Canada but they are everywhere including NY. Mine do not all look like the picture here, we have a variety with spotted wings in my area. http://www.hometalk.com/diy/outdoor/pest-repeller/q-insects-10082389?se=fol_new-20150913-1&utm_medium=email&utm_source=fol_new&date=20150913Helpful Reply
