How to Transform Laminate Furniture

It is so fun when I happen upon something free that I wasn't expecting. I had gone to pick up some free wood from craig's list and I found this cheap laminate cabinet that was free as well. I couldn't pass it up but wasn't expecting to to any thing with it in the near future. Then it struck me one day that it would make a perfect storage bench for under my window in my living room. So I set to work to make the transformation...and I am LOVING it!
This it what I started with, a cheap laminate cabinet that was dusty and dirty and some of the laminate was peeling off. It was structurally sound and that was all that mattered, I knew it could look amazing with a little love!
All I needed was some scrap wood, most of which was also free, to make this transformation. I added it to the top an bottom with glue and finish nails.
Then I added trim and a nice top to complete my work!

The final product is so pretty and looks so nice under my window! I can't believe I spent less than $20, I would say it was totally worth the effort!

This seems like a decorative piece, is it sturdy enough to me an actual bench, say in a mud room??
