Vintage Dresser Turned Dining Room Buffet

When my brother asked me to help him redo a family heirloom dresser my first response was "I am not painting it!!!!" ....luckily I was able to get him on board with a charcoal stain makeover instead.
We redid the dresser... along with a nightstand, a bureau, a mirror, and two bookcases... over the course of the weekend. Note my great-grandmother's handwriting on the back- she purchased this piece for my Papa in November 1943!!
The dresser was in great shape but was super orange and showed signs of many years of love.

My brother sanded the whole thing down with the lowest grit sandpaper we could find, then I wiped it all with a damp cloth and applied two coats of Minwax charcoal stain and three coats of wax.

I would recommend sanding it with 100 or 150 grit before staining but it was 90* out and we had been sanding forever so we opted to skip that step. It left a few spots with the old stain still in tact, which ended up looking pretty cool.
In the places where we didn't sand as cleanly, the old color showed through and gave the piece a really cool washed out/rustic effect.

We switched the knobs out too to add to the update.
Now the piece sits in my brother's dining room and has a whole new life!
