Decks & Patios Fences Outdoor Living

Anyone with a dog?

Would you like the complete invisible fence system? Why am I offering it? My 2 dogs were able to roam an acre or more with only the invisible fence (after being trained). This worked for several years until my boy dog decided to cross. He walked across it, he didn't run across. He also came back across the invisible fence. Guess his eyes were bad and he didn't see the invisible fence.

My friends (they were my friends) used the collars on themselves to test it and they did not want to cross the invisible fence line.

I don't have the collars because I gave up and threw them away. Today I removed the Invisible fence hardware that makes the collars work & this is the most expensive part of the system.

Its not the fence that is at fault. Batteries in the collars need to be changed or kept charged is on reason. The other is if the collar is not properly fit onto the dog it will not work. As owning a hunting dog which uses a portable collar I need to keep his neck hair cut shorter or keep the collar on real tight in order for the probes to touch his neck. I learned about this from days regardless of what the intensity of the collar was set at he simply did not obey by commands. So unless ...»
I keep it on real tight or his neck hair clipped a bit shorter it will not work.

Better quality collars that can be purchased for home containment systems have buzzers built in warning the dog, or husband, that they are getting close to being zapped.

Good thing you explained that collar Bob. I thought it was a collar of shame. :D

Woodbridge. I had the invisible fence for years and was on a replacement battery program every 4 months. Neither the fence for the collars were the problem. One big boy dog was/is the problem. Before I gave up I had the invisible fence people visit so they could check everything and give me recommendations. They suggested I get a new collar & assured me it would stop anything - yup anything but the boy dog. ...»

The invisible fence does buzz when you get within 10-15 feet of it. It is a quality system. This is the original Invisible fence company equipment.

I returned the collar & got a refund. Do you want the equipment?

No thanks. It will give my wife something to put on me instead of the dog.

I am really surprised that its not keeping your dog in containment. I am glad they refunded you.

Put it on Ebay. It will sell if a flash.

    Or Craig's List...

Its against a dogs nature to "be confined" Their Seeking system is what drives their lives...keep in mind that all dogs evolved from wolf stock and having miles of "free range" to live and "hunt" in is hardcoded in their DNA

I've seen a lot of dogs just suddenly go "immune" to these fences .... not all, by any means, but several.... their drive to wander is just too large and eventually, some decide it's worth the shock.

Natalie you are correct. The boy doesn't run away - he just walks out to visit neighbors and people walking their dogs. He then comes back right through the fence. The girl dog won't get within 15' of it. She just barks until he returns. He weighs 103 lbs and I weigh less so I couldn't pull him back if I wanted to.

I really don't care to sell the fence. I would rather give it to someone who could use it. Woodbridge, maybe your wife would like it.

I just remembered that Yahoo has freecycle. It is a place I can post the free offer. I'd rather not throw it away - I'm a tree hugger.

Free cycle would be great! A lot of peple would probably jump on getting one of these. I would, if I had a dog.

I've considered one of these but my little guy only weighs 5.5 lbs. I keep him inside because of chicken hawks.

Donna, keep your little guy with you at all times because he is small & many animals & even big birds could hurt him. That little guy needs you to protect him & I bet he wants to stay close to you, too.

The fence I offered or any other type of invisible or other fence is definitely not for him. My dogs are big and a hawk or eagle could not and wouldn't even try to pick them up. I have eagles & hawks in my area.

Eno is with me all the time - I let him run the fenced part of our yard occasionally if I'm around. He's mostly an inside dog. It sounds more cat like but I even have him box trained using a dog patch. He'd get lost in the snow up here. Plus I'm not about to walk him in the bitter cold.

Donna, good for you. My big dogs are also inside dogs but they would love your snow and bitter cold. I wouldn't. Eno is so cute.

Thank you Sherrie. He is cuddled up against me right now. Big dogs are fun too. But they must poo outside -

An old buddy of mine has an invisible fence system. After a while his dog did become "immune" to the shock of it. He upgraded the collar to a stronger kicking one. The dog tested it one day, and has never gone near the boundry/fence line again.

Donna, my dogs have a door to the outside. They go out anytime they have the "urge". The fence is 30' long but only 40" wide. It is cemented into the deck so they cannot escape by digging.

It looks nice and gives the dogs a lot of freedom. The dogs are big so they needed some space.
