I have a small place. I think it's a 1/2 acre, the house was built in 1948, rectangular plot... I have fencing up, but it's not a privacy fence. I want to plant something that will grow into a privacy "fence" along the back of the property. Prefer something that is narrow, but won't grow too tall. I live in north of the river in Richmond, VA- if that helps with the area for growing. Thanks for any advice. :)

Janelle, for the conditions you describe, I think "Bright 'N Tight" cherry laurel would be an excellent choice. It has a compact, upright form and takes well to occasional shearing if you want a more clipped, formal look. For a taller hedge, and if you don't mind the plant being deciduous, upright European hornbeam, Carpinus betulus "Fastigiata," would be a particularly elegant choice.
