I need to replace the string on my very old Trim-All trimmer.

I've looked at videos to see how to do this and they all show spools with a hole in them to insert the string into to make it possible to wind it tightly around the spool. But mine, over 30 yrs old, has no hole. A guy who did some yard work for me replaced the string a while back but I don't know what he did. So, what do I do to keep the string tight so I can wind it around the spool? And about how many feet should I put on it? I saw a video that said 30 ft and one that said about 12 ft. None of the videos showed a Trim-All, which seems not to be manufactured anymore.

I wish I could help you more Louise, but I have never used this type of trimmer. I did find a site that you might be able to find the part for it. http://www.partsbuggy.com/wc.dll?ctwp~getapplctns~1005~1003~0

@Louise I thought you could buy a new spool filled with line. As I said, I don't use these, but know my hubby has bought spools already threaded on older models we have. Not sure what he does with the current gas powered one. I thought about suggesting using tape, but figured you'd have tried that.

I use a piece of duck tape to hold the end on the spool while I wind the rest on . I just fill the spool almost full . This is not the proper way to do it I'm sure but it has worked for me .

@Jean Myles That's a great idea! Thanks. I have plenty of tape.

unfortunately the trimmers come and go. The older models never have the right replacement spools available. If the tape does not work which I feel will get caught It mat be time to purchase a new one.Sometimes you can find a refurbished weed wacker for a lot less money Check home depot.

I have had this type and it is a lot more difficult to describe than to do. On the solid end of the blue (inner) piece, there should be an arrow to let you know which way to wind the line. Begin by securing the end of the line through a hole or something to catch and hold the end, then just wind in the right direction and keep going till it is full. Then take the loose end and thread it thru the hole in the outer black piece and fit it all back onto the trimmer. If you need help, any Home Depot or Lowe's can help you and you'll never need help again. It is very simple when you see how it works.

Drop of hot glue? Drill a small hole in it with a dremel or tiny drill bit?

In the top picture, I see two v-shapes on the top of the blue piece, looks like there is an indentation on the inside that leads out the top in the V. That is where the string goes to secure it while you wind in the direction of the arrow. I have a different kind that quit auto-advancing. Can wind just fine and it cuts, but I have to turn off and pull the string out manually. Might take to hardware store and see if they can fix.

Throw out the spools buy new aftermarket lock down style line holder they just hold Two bits of line at a time you use thicker line and when line is gone just unscrew and put two new lines in , not sure of band in you part of the world sorry we have something called a little juey no more annoying bump feed . Best thing you will every do

The line size is important. Most electric trimmers use a 0.065 line. Gas powered ones use 0.070 or larger. I like the duct tape solution.> "If it needs to be stuck -duct tape. If it needs to move -WD-40."
