Staining a new deck

We live in northern Georgia. We have just completed a new second story deck constructed of (non-pressured) pine. It was completed in mid July and has full sun with a southerly exposure. I have 4 questions: 1) What stain would you recommend? 2) Can I go ahead and stain it now? 3) Since the bottom of the deck is exposed to another cement patio below, should I stain the top of the deck first, or underneath the deck first? 4) Any tips on how to best apply the stain underneath? Many thanks for your help.

My advice to you is to start at the top of the deck.It is always best to stain early in the morning before the sun gets to hot.As for the best stain to use I would research that for your location. I found this website Deckstainhelp.com.

I prefer Thompson's water seal over stain like Behr. It gives the wood a rich look and the water beads right off. You won't risk an inconsistent color either considering having to do two sides. Uneven absorption and drips will be a problem with stain.

I can't say from personal experience because I've never had a deck but I saw this HomeTalk post a couple months ago and found it interesting. Lots of negative comments about Thompson's product, including several comments from a member (John Wilder) who says he is an award winning decking contractor. http://www.hometalk.com/diy/outdoor/q-how-to-remove-thompsons-water-sealer-on-wood-deck-9239666... I am currently in the process of using Woodscapes solid wood stain from Sherwin Williams on some pressure treated wood and I'm very happy with the way it is going on and the way it looks. Of course, how it holds up, long term, is still to be determined! Before deciding to buy the Sherwin Williams stain, I talked to a clerk in the paint department at Home Depot and I was surprised he actually had some negative things to say about his own personal experience with the Behr stain he sells! I thought, "Yikes!" but was thankful he was so candid.

@Greg von Seeger Agree about Behr paint--I have used the paint 2 times, once on an interior job and once on an exterior job and said, "Never again!" (I do love their colors though!) However, I had no experience with any brand of solid stain so when my current project came up, I thought I would investigate Behr stain with an open mind, despite my negative experience with the paint. So glad I ran into the honest sales guy!!! Good luck with your project. Your new deck is lovely and whatever you decide to do you, I'm sure you will have many enjoyable hours sitting out there, looking at that view!

Just an fyi Behr paints and stains are rated Number one. Having worked with behr products for many years I have never had a problem unless the color was not right.Just saying.
