I've been searching on line for a floating shelf to use as a mantle.

If I find one long enough it's not deep enough, etc. I need 67" or so long and the standard depth of a mantle - would that be 10"? Any suggestions?

Sound like time for a custom build !!. A basic hollow core box, made from ply and a little solid wood could fit this bill pretty easy. A cleat is made to fit the "inside" of the self and mounted to the wall. The hollow side of the self then slips over this "cleat" and is secured by a few screws from below. Parts would run about 60 to 80. In oak / oak ply.

    check with some local woodworkers.

Hmmm, I guess I could give this a try. It will be painted so can I use cheaper wood? I'm not sure how to build a cleat and fasten it to the wall. Does it need to fit inside the box like a glove? What type of fasteners? L brackets?

Donna, I am not an expert when it come to wood but to frame a head board I bought Pine wood primed and painted it. I then distressed it and it looks great. KMS is the king of woods he may have a better wood choice for you but Pine worked for me.

If you are going to paint it MDF or GIS ply would work ( GIS ply is a smooth version of the more common CDX type construction ply)

1 sheet of MDF would be all you would need. The shelf would be built like a long skinny "trough". With the front of the mantle being the bottom side of the trough. The cleat would be sized to just slip inside the opening of the trough. I would "stack" about 3 layers of MDF to build up the ...»

cleat. The first "layer" being screwed to the wall studs then second and third layers glued and screwed to that. The end result would stick out about 2 1/2" from the wall. The cleat mounting should all be predrilled to limit splitting. When the "trough" is built it could be built by gluing and using some small finish nails

Hey Donna, I agree with KMS...I too did a qiuck online search, & could not find the length you need. A carpenter could knock that out quickly and might be cheaper than you trying and messing up several pieces of wood [although I don't know your skill set]. Best of luck!

ripping the plywood into the right width strips will require a table saw or a clamped "guide" for a circular saw....do you have access to these?

No, but my local home depot cuts the wood I buy for free.

The dimensions on these floating shelves often vary. In my experience, IKEA always has a large selection of these; some of which are customizable. They allow you to pick the length, width and style. GOOD LUCK!

Just got back from the Super Home Depot - they had great glass shelves - I also went to Home Decorators and picked up a great round mirror. We'll see which works better or maybe both. I'll keep you posted....
