Just moved into new rental house. Our little Doxie will follow me upstairs, not good for his old back...
Any ideas how I can devise a way to secure the gate, nothing permanent, since it is only necessary when I'm upstairs?? Using pieces of petrified wood, i.e. fancy rocks right now. They slide and I'm afraid of damaging tile floor.

Schultz is 12 and has already had back surgery once!🐶
Thought about Velcro loops around banister....
Also thought of a hinged leg and strap, kinda like an easel??

Are you afraid the gate will tip over just standing up? I have 4 Jack Russell's they are fine with the hinged gates just standing without adding anything. The smallest one sometimes pushes gate open to let the others FREE!! If you are handy with wood maybe a solution would be to make two U shape stands to put the bottom in for sturdiness? the velcro would work also and be easy! Good Luck!

The u shaped supports sound good. I do need something because he will nose the gate till it falls.. Then proceed to venture up the stairs😮😏

Try a bungee cord.It has hooks on each end & elastic. Hook it in one hole, wrap around bottom of round part of post and other hook end into lower hole. Now do the other side. This works great for small dogs; used it to keep dog in porch in summer.

All dachshunds have the middle name "houdini", where there is a will there is a way for them. There is nothing wrong with the way you have the barrier set up now. Since you are afraid that it will scratch the floor, why not attach some carpeting to the bottom of the existing gate to protect the floor? I dont think that I would use velcro to help secure the gate to the steps, because velcro will give and doxies are tenacious enough to rip it loose. I like the idea of bungee as it is softer and wont scratch the banisters. Play around with all of the ideas presented. Your doxie will let you know if it is foolproof or not.

Thanks, he certainly can defeat most barriers..had one so he couldn't jump into the front seat of the car, nosed around that one! Made one out of foam board that worked. But that's another story🐶 Still weighing the options..

I made a 'firescreen" of half round shaped wood with a wider heavy wood base piece so it sits and does not tip, sanded smooth the edges all around, stained wood to match the stair railings, coat of satin poly, and used a nice brass door pull near the top and it picks up and moves easy, very attractive. Kept my aging boxer from coming up to the ivory carpeted second floor. Also worked with the grandson until about three and a half..;)

I like affenske's bungee cord idea. Since it's a rental house, you really can't be drilling and adding hardware to anything.

I was also going to suggest bungee cords. How about drops of silicone or caulk, or felt pads on the bottom of the gate. You can use the silicone or caulk on the bottom of the rocks too, that will prevent sliding. Good luck.

Simple eye & hook on each end should work.....hook being on your "fencing"....if you ever move...a little wood putty will take care of where you secure the "eye" part....BTW..cute "fencing"....:)

I use a standard cheap baby gate, it's easy because it adjusts to the size of each of our doors and it fits at the stairs as well.

I agree with Sharon, the expandable baby gates , no need to fasten it to a wall, they adjust..and it works!
