Leak in pond

I found root intrusion at the top of the stream from where the water steams out. What can be done? I live in California and we are in a severe drought. Cannot keep filling it up because water is so precious. Hoping to have it fixed in time for el nino. Thank you in advance!

Empty the pond, then repair the hole, or put in a new liner, then return everything to the pond. Remove the plant with the aggressive root growth with a plant that doesn't have the aggressive root growth.

If possible drain the water into some kind of holding tank to eliminate the water waste.

Thanks for the suggestion. It is a tree root. It cannot be removed.

My question would be: what kind of tree? Some, like a fruitless mulberry, will always be invading the pond. If it is a small area, perhaps you could put a layer of concrete under the pond liner and that might stop any tree that has a good tap root. But trees with a lot of surface roots will find a way to the water...the drought has made it worse, of course.
