Refacing my brick fireplace

I have a semi formal living room and a brick fireplace. It was built with the home way before I purchased house; I really don't feel it looks appropriate for the room and I already have a brick fireplace in the den which is fine. Any suggestions?

We had a carpenter friend build us a mantel that covered the stone fireplace in our living room. Made a world of difference.. Our fireplace was rough, grayish fieldstone, had one just like it in the family room. That one we just painted white , and even that made it look so much better.
