You can decoupage them with decorative paper, maps, magazine pages, or fabric.

If you have any unused linens, lace etc. that could be of interest.

Use Mod Podge to attached the fabric, or watered down white glue. Add interest with actual old hardware, or hit the scrapbook section and find some interesting decorative pieces.

I do this all the time - I affix the fabric with white glue - messy but it results in a very sturdy storage container. Most of the boxes I've used have started out as boxes from the snacks bought for the kitchen where I work. , Since they have brightly colored designs on the outside, I've put a layer of white (muslin, old sheets, etc) fabric on the outside first, then the "designer" fabric. I've also covered a box in vinyl, using white glue, also resulting in a very sturdy container.

I have used wallpaper paste and newspaper to make bookshelves out of copier paper boxes - they were so strong, I could stand on them. I painted them so the newspaper print didn't matter. I used these while in college for text books.
