Can anyone suggest what a good replacement is for this 70's wooden valance?

I have added granite counters, am restaining the cabinets in the same color and will add some type of backsplash when I finish the rest. I would also like to have a pendant light hanging from the window.

What about something as simple as this? The scalloped valance was trimmed and the new arch was set on top, flush with the cabinet doors.

Can you remove the valance altogether? If you want a pendant light over the sink, wouldn't it look better hanging from the ceiling?

My parents had this in their house. They just took it down, cut it straight, then reapplied it!

I like the detail altogether but if it bother you yes I would have it removed or treat the entire window and valance as a separate architectural piece and treat with a contrasting color.

Here is an idea, in the photo the shelf & awning over the stove, is my suggestion to go over your sink in place of the scalloped look. http://legacyconstructionusa.com/img/kitchen...

I would completely remove it and hang an eye catching pendant light in the center directly over the stove, the wooden framing of the window is beautiful and if you'd like you can put a valance at top of window to help w/sunlight blaring in if that's a problem, nice granite

Hey there. We re-did our kitchen and had the same valance over the window. Removing it gave us our window back and let so much more light into the room. You can see some more before and after pictures here....

Some hometalkers have beat me to the punch with this one, but I would have to agree that removing it and installing a light fixture (pendant or canned light) would look best and be the most useful. The space feels dated and cluttered and this would open it up. GOOD LUCK!

There is a little hitch, in the photo it appears that your builder made a soffit, in other words a lower ceiling, you might have to cut the sheet rock and repair & paint.

It is as I said, but it will look good if you simply remove the board & putty the wood holes, but Martine's cabinets go to the ceiling & yours go to a lower soffit

Personally I like THIS scalloped valance as it is different from what we usually see. Perhaps it could be painted a complimentary color and glazed to accent it rather than take it away. Then a recessed light in the soffit to bath light from behind it and down to the sink. Might look pretty special!

I do have a soffit. Will take pictures and send them as we progress. We are just experimenting away.

I redid my kitchen a few years ago and I had a wooden valance like this as well....what I did was unscrew the valance and had someone cut off the wavy portion with a straight cut and rescrewed it up. The nice things was that it actually opened up the area more and modernized the look...very quick fix.
