Wrought Iron bedstead in desperate need of refinishing

Casey
by Casey
I have an old fashioned wrought iron bedstead over time it has accumulated several layers of paint (in several horrible colors) the most recent layer is white and close to 30 years old. I would like to restore it and keep it white but I'm not sure if it would be better to lightly sand what's already there and paint over it or if I should use paint stripper to return it to bare metal and then repaint it.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

See if your neighborhood car painter will tackle the job. I think automotive paint would give a beautiful, hard-wearing finish. My local paint shop will mix up any color auto paint, so you can check your local paint shop if you want to spray it yourself.

@Casey I agree with Casey! I had a friend that had her bed sand-blasted and painted at an automotive shop and it's beautiful!

It would best best to strip the exisiting paint since there are so many coats of paint.

Another concern: is the old paint lead based?

If you can find someone to sandblast it to the bare metal you will be happier once you have applied your fresh spray on paint

I have my parents old iron bedstead. It had many layers of paint on it. I had it sandblasted and primered and then spraypainted it myself. It looks great.

I found someone that can sandblast my bed frame for almost nothing, does anyone have any suggestions regarding repainting it? Can I use good quality spary paint?

Be sure to primer it good before you spray paint it.
