Pool pumps - How long should they run daily?

Salt water in ground pool: 3 Hayward Pool Pumps in 6 years...MUST be an electric connection issue, so we will look....the pool guy is pretty good...he says to run pool pump 24/7. I have family that ONLY runs 8 hours a day, HOW many hours should the pump run daily do you all recommend?? (we know with heavy storms, we run it more and maintain the balance, I mean on a regular basis)

We used to run ours during the day, and shut it off at night before bed...never had an issue. I suppose with the price of electricity, it may be better to run it at night...

A lot depends on where you are. Running during day is what keeps the algae away :). Size of pool/filter. 6-8 hrs usually circulates the pool water twice. I found that with the saltwater system, I didn't have to run it 24/7.

@Debi S Thank you Deb. I've got to resolve the Pump issue and Pool guy thinks turning off and on is causing more damage, THOUGH I suspect MANY/MOST pool pumps are set to go on/off daily and last years. Ours lasts 1-2 years. I'll try the electrician next to see if the electric is hooked up wrong that is allowing a current 24/ even with the pump off, that may be overheating the pump. ((?? What the pool guy suggested could be the problem.) ** One thing I am sure of is, Hayward who is enough to provide help or at least replace the pump if I am on my 3rd pump, going on 4th in 6 years, they seem apathetic to even help try to figure out what the issue is. I PAID while under warranty for a Hayward tech to install one pump and he should have seen if anything was not right.

We have an above ground salt water pool, had one at the previous home also...love the salt never much maintenance. Never any algae, water is always crystal. Our Hayward pump has performed perfectly for 3 years with the timer set for night time running; 5-6 hrs in the winter, 10-12 hrs in the summer season and during daytime only when people are in it. We are in central Texas where summers can hit 3 digits for 2 or 3 months! The first pump ran that way for 5 years. We did our maintenance and backwashing, and cleaning the salt cell as recommended and so far never had a problem with either pump or salt system.

@Becci Wells very helpful. I am in southern VA where we MAY get 2 weeks of 3 digit temps, but for most part, high 80s, low 90s. Pool is only open between end of April thru 1st week of Oct. Pool guy feels maybe the sun is too much for the pump causing it to get too hot, and the suggestion for running it 24/7 doesn't seem to have anyone else agreeing. Pool guy does the cleaning and we do the backwashing and adding Salt when necessary, though not sure HE or we do Salt Cell cleaning.... not even sure HOW to do that, so I'll have to look it up. Thank you

Cleaning the cell is imperative! We have Hayward AQ-TROL-RJ AquaTrol Salt Water Chlorine Generator and Hayward Power Flo LX 1.0hp pump and sand filter. You need to clean the salt cell a couple times but at least once a season. This could affect the pump...although not sure about that. You won't get an accurate reading for chlorine etc if the cell is dirty and it could fail sooner if not kept clean. If it does its easy for algae to get a hold on the pool. Another big factor is the salt level. Your salt should be about 3300 to 3400 to operate efficiently and produce the right amount of chlorine. Our pool is 10k gals.

@Becci Wells ok, I found a couple YouTubes and also a Hayward website talking to cleaning it. Does the following steps outlined by Hayward make sense to you? - and THANK you for your help!!

Sounds good....and good luck. I forgot to mention that our pump is enclosed except for one open side by a little corrugated metal shed we built over it. Keeps it protected from the elements and muffles the sound. You might consider doing this for yours.

@Becci Wells I agree, asked my contractor to look at doing something like this. Thank you Becci

Depends on amount of water and weather conditions. A 32,000 gallon pool hot summer 12 hours.
