"Look a like" wooden flooring alternative??

Josie
by Josie
Hi, can anyone suggest an alternative to wood for wooden flooring?! I live on the first floor of a maisonette. The property was purpose built in 1890...and is of solid construction and for the most part soundproof. However, I'm worried that it will be noisy for my neighbours. I hate laminate flooring so that's not an option. Any ideas?

It's hard to know what products you have available to you in the UK. Here in the U.S., we have vinyl planks that look like wood. Trafficmaster Allure and Trafficmaster Ultra are two kinds I'm familiar with. Each plank of the Allure style has a sticky edge that bonds with the adjoining plank and it's water resistant so it can be used in bathrooms and kitchens. The Ultra style snaps together like laminate does and it is waterproof. I hate laminate flooring too but I LOVE my Allure and hope to someday replace my laminate with either Allure or Ultra. Vinyl planking is budget friendly, so easy to care for, soft and quiet to walk on and quite durable so it's good for homes with pets and children. Tile is also being made in planks that look like wood and when it is laid close together so the grout lines are very minimal, it looks very realistic.

Although you mentioned you hate laminate flooring it is your best alternative. They have totally improved the look and installation of it. Try looking at what is new.

@Janet Pizaro Costco has a terrific laminate planking product. A foam layer is attached to each piece for sound deadening. Product comes in several shades.

I installed cork flooring. Looks good and easier on the feet/legs.

I like the idea of cork too. It would be the quietest of the wood flooring.

There is one other type of flooring that you can use. It is a vinyl wood plank floor, a click type that looks remarkably like wood planks, can float over any other type of flooring and is very quiet compared to laminate flooring. Companies like Armstrong, and other large flooring manufacturers make it and it has come a long way since it first came out as peel and stick. Perhaps you ahve a company that makes it or imports it in the UK. Good luck.

Luxury vinyl tile or planking is an option that is also resistant to water damage, unlike laminates. The color goes clear through the vinyl, and it is easy to clean. I have some that looks like hand-scraped wood plank floors, and it is both really nice looking and easy upkeep.
