I would strip the piece down and stain it according to the rest of your decor.

Redo as in refinish, paint, or repurpose?

@Alyssa Rae, I almost always pick to re-stain over painting a piece of wood furniture. To me it holds it's value more and just plain looks richer stained. I just don't care for painting over good wood, but it's very hard to tell what type the wood is from your picture so I can't help you there. Another thing is , it would help to know what the rest of the room looks like that it will be used in. Without knowing that, it's just a guess.

I would refinish the piece, keep the drawer--drawer space is a premium for me, put a wicker basket inside the bottom for additional storage or use a smaller box and decorate it to contain pet toys. If you need more ideas, please let me know.

    • @Alyssa Rae Ifflander Chalk paint is great to work with and there isn't much prep. Or just spray paint it. I took an old ratty desk and added fabric to the drawers with Mod Podge and painted the rest of it. It's not hard and you get a great piece after.

The main thing is to decide WHERE you are going to put it.....If I were to put it in my house, because I love things that are eclectic--it would fit just about any where! I would use chalk paint. Afterwards, you can also tip the edges around the handles, etc with stain should you desire. DON'T be afraid to just "attack it!" HAVE FUN!! Always remember--should you not be happy with it, just paint a primer over everything and redo it/-)

I have an identical piece I found at the take-it-or-leave-it shed at our transfer station. I stripped it and left it natural. The grain is so beautiful. Next, I hand rubbed tung oil into the wood to enhance the wood grain and give it a bit of luster and protection. It's beautiful.

@Janie D I just thought it would be nice to see it.

Hi Alyssa, this one is similar to yours but done with chalk paint and repositionable wall paper that I got at Michaels. It was probably in rougher shape than yours. Normally I would restore the wood, but this time there were several rough spots that probably wouldn't have stained well, I did it to match a chest of drawers I had redone,

Make it a small pet bed the repaint and add a cushion in the bottom for the pet. Stand and bed in one.

I have an almost identical one. Someone replaced the the pulls with white ceramic ones. I happened to have a decorative black and white contact paper with a forgiving print. I adhered it to the top and it turned out lovely with very little effort.
