Are granite counter tops nice to have?

I'm thinking about installing granite counter tops is this practical. Would you recommend something else?

I am in the process of a complete kitchen remodel and believe me...I have researched and shopped for every type of counter top known to man! I settled on quartz for my entire kitchen with the exception of the island, where I went with Granite for the "drama". Quartz or Quartzite is the hardest stone option, the most durable and requires the least amount of maintenance. Quartz is beautiful, but its man made and does not come with the type of "movement" that you find in granite and marble. They are expanding quartz options to more resemble granite with regard to color. Granite is beautiful with tons of options, however it can stain (red wine, etc.) and needs to be sealed regularly. The last option is marble....very popular right now and equally beautiful, but a very soft stone, easily stained and must be polished and sealed regularly. Lastly butcher block is really making a come back. Lots of options, beautiful and easily maintained. Can provide that weathered, used appearance that is popular right now. Good luck!

No stay with the granite.I renovated my kitchen two years ago. They clean very well with vinegar and water.

Granite my son does granite and did my kitchen , and highly recommend. I love my kitchen.....

When we remodeled our kitchen 16 years ago, we splurged on granite. I still love it; but if we were doing the project today, I would choose Quartz. Granite takes a lot more maintenance.

I'm with Dawn and Lynne. I did a whole lot of research while designing our kitchen in our new build and we went with quartz. Ours is by Silestone purchased through HoDe. Twelve years later it still looks like new. All I do to clean it is warm water and blue Dawn dish soap. Other than normal cleaning, it's virtually maintenance free. It's 25 year transferable warranty says a lot about their confidence in their product. This link should answer any other questions you have about this product. I purchased granite from home depot 4 yrs ago. It comes with a 15 year warranty on the seal. Not a stain or scratch ever. Not high maintenance at all. To reseal wipe sealer on, let dry, buff off. Not difficult. I Have not had to do that yet. I have read that vinegar, oil, lemon juice, etc can harm your granite. All that has been inadvertently left on my granite at one time or another and has never done any damage. I also have hard water and my faucet is installed right on the granite and I don't have issues with hard water/scale/lime buildup. I believe my granite has held up so well because of the sealing process/product that the granite fabricator uses. I do not know if all Home Depots have this same warranty.

Hi, I too have granite and like it very much, very easy maintenance. However, Silestone by Cossentino has a stone that looks just like Carrera Marble and is an excellent substitute for the look of marble if that is something you might be interested in, I don't know what the rest of your kitchen looks like. You can't go wrong with granite or one of the newer quartz models.

Remodeled kitchen last spring, researched all that's out there. Chose granite and absolutely love it. So easy to keep clean, no worries about what goes on top of it.

My son in law built cabinets with white cement counter tops. You can do anything on them. Roll out pie dough etc. I know it's hard to imagine, but if I ever had to change I would go with them. you can bleach them also, set hot pans on them so many good reasons.

I clean for a living and granite counter tops are beautiful. Easy maintained. And I want them! Next update in my house will be granite

I actually don't recommend it if you do a lot of baking, or are someone who will inadvertently spill raw chicken juice on it. Why? Granite is a porous surface and no matter how you clean it, or seal it it's not food safe. As someone who does a lot of baking I wanted to be able to roll pastry crust on my counters. Therefore, I went with quartz. Quartz is a non-porous, certified food safe surface. It requires no maintenance but a wipe down with a damp cloth. Never needs sealing. The big box retailers are carrying a number of brands now. However, Cambria Quartz is insanely gorgeous and only carried by independent retailers.
