Fabric Paint - Which Is Best?

We've seen LOTS of ideas on Hometalk that involved painting fabric. We LOVE the idea, but can't decide which way is best?
In your expert opinions: #1 - Which is the best value? #2 - Which is best for outdoor (patio furniture)? #3 - Which is best for indoor chair cushions with kids in the house?
Heard this was great, but that you need a lot of paint and the price starts to add up...

I'm going to tag a few people who I know have used fabric paint: @Debra D @Beckie @ Infarrantly Creative @What Meegan Makes what are your thoughts?
  • Best way is to hire someone else to do it. :)
  • That was a great post, Thank you @G B

I bought Dupli-Color Vinyl & Fabric spray paint to use on my sofa. Only tested a small part of a chair; however, the fumes are overwhelming so the project has been moved to Spring or Summer when I can open windows, etc. Sold online but also available in auto supply stores. Uses for dashboards, door panels, seats and carpet.
  • Now this is an interesting find @G B ! The price looks incredibly reasonable. How does the chair look? Is the color true?

AK, I only did a small sample but it will work for me once I can get ventilation in the house. The living room set was white originally but has turned more ivory over the years. I noticed that I lost some of the definition of the brocade pattern but that's okay, too. I'm just trying retain a set that I love and can't get cleaned. If professionals won't touch it...I surely don't need to try doing it, either.

Painted a few pieces indoor and outdoor pieces with latex paint and a fabric medium and they both came out fine…this was about a year ago and all are holding up fine

@Tammy H - Does it matter on the brand of latex paint? I really want to redo my out door seating. How much ratio to each?

Hi don't know if you all ready painted? I did a ton of reading about painting outdoor fabric. I am very "Cheap" frugal. I bought a mismatched gallon of $60.00 ben her paint for $9.00. Told the paint guy what I was going to do and he said it will never work. The fabric medium is quite costly so only added very very little, laid out 9 foot umbrella outside started to paint. it took 2 coats and 3 in some spots. No the paint did not come off in rain and the colour HAS NOT changed with the weather in 2 years. So to paint fabric I say yes.
