Dresser Makeover With DIY Beaded Drawer Pulls

4 Materials
What to do when a complete dresser makeover is stalled by a lack of original hardware...or replacement hardware isn't readily available in the right size? Make your own!
The first time I saw this "holy smokes" find, I passed it up because I wasn't sure I would be able to remove that flashy gold and cream finish.
I love the curves of Serpentine Dressers and knew there was tiger oak (also called "quarter sawn" wood) underneath that flashy paint job. Even though I never stripped furniture before I knew this barn sale find couldn't get any worse. So I went back a year later and brought it home.

But what to do for hardware?
I recalled a favorite blogger had posted that she used wooden beads to replace drawer hardware. I wanted something a little flashier so I picked up a couple of cheapie pearl and silver bracelets, mixed bead strings, and 18 gauge wire.

With a little bending and restringing, I came up with these options:
I popped them through the original holes, twisted the wire tightly in the back (I'd secure with staple gun if these were drawers I'd use frequently) and LOVED the outcome!
For about $30, I had custom hardware that really gave this makeover the perfect finishing touch.
I'm super excited about the finished dresser...my favorite project to date!

I love this! I have a dresser that has been sitting for almost a year! I am going to go this direction.

I particularly like the beautiful sheen you got on both the stained and painted parts...just lovely. How did you get that nice sheen?
