Browsing high end home catalogs for Halloween decorations is fun, but can never quite convince myself to pay the sky-high prices for seasonal decor. Last year I feel in love with a black and white paper mache pumpkin luminary... but could not believe the $89 price tag. I decided to make this easy Pumpkin Luminary that looks just like the high end luminary but costs $67.66 less than the catalog version!
I love crafty jack-o-lanterns, but hate how fast they rot away. Last year I decided to make craft pumpkin luminaries that can be used indoors and outside. I purchased a large craft pumpkin at Michaels and two Dollar Store foam pumpkins to make this fun luminary display.
My goal was to recreate this Pottery Barn luminary. It's adorable, but was priced higher than my budget would allow... $89!
Step 1: Spray paint the pumpkins black. Use several light coats to avoid drips. Allow the paint to dry completely.
Step 2: Cut and add letters. The letters can be added several ways. I cut these "eek" letter from cheap white contact paper using a Silhouette vinyl cutter. (Get the free cut file at BrenDid). You can also print a free PDF pattern to hand cut the letters.
If you don't want to use vinyl letters you can use the free pattern to make stencils for easy painting. Dab on white acrylic paint. Remove stencil. Allow paint to dry completely.
Step 3: Carve out the letter centers from the large craft pumpkin. This allows light to show through the pumpkin. Luckily craft pumpkins are easy to carve with a kitchen knife.
Step 4: Add a battery operated tea light candle through the letter holes and display your lovely luminary.
I love the final results! The luminary can be used indoors or outside.
