Power sander used on round table

I purchased a round side table at an estate sale. When I got it home, I noticed someone had used an orbital sander on the top. Why oh why would they do that? You can see that the grain of the wood is ruined. Does anyone have a suggestion of what I should do? I would like to refinish the top. Much help please.

does it have a veneer top? if so take it off...by using an iron and a putty knife...it takes awhile to do but well worth it after it is done

Try getting a refinishing kit from minwax.clean strip and restain.

If the top is solid wood, it can be reclaimed with a belt sander, following the grain of the wood, then using a scraper, carefully, to make the top satin smooth. Work yes, but if it is a good piece of furniture. If it is an antique, the antique value is already gone (from the prior sanding) but if it is solid, you can still have a fine piece of furniture.

@Kathy Kinney Thank you so much for your reply. I agree the value is already gone from the piece. I am going to try what you suggested. If it goes south, I guess I'll chalk paint it. I SO hate to do that.
