Paint formica kitchen cabinets

The cabinets are a real dark color and are in pretty good shape yet for being 40 plus years old. I want to lighten the color so the kitchen is a little brighter. What kind of paint should I use and any other help you can provide?

I had a Formica backsplash and metal cabinets that I successfully painted. I used Benjamin Moore Fresh Start to prime it first, it gave the surface a smooth Sheetrock like finish. I used a high gloss paint and never had a problem. Benjamin Moore makes a paint made just for cabinets. It allows for self leveling so you don't see brush marks. Of course spraying is an option but not for a beginner. I would also suggest new handles that come away from the cabinet door so there is less daily contact with the painted surface. Have fun and try a light color other than white. And painting the walls a fresh color will update the room too. Now if you're really adventurous, paint the countertop. I just did a faux granite using sponges, and acrylic craft paint mixed with polycrylic. It is beautiful. I've even used marine grade paint for a waterproof finish on a countertop and shower that stood the test of time. I prefer re-doing over replacing. Please post back with your results.

I have done this with success. Rough up finish by sanding heavily. Prime well (ask hardware paint person of right primer) Use a satin finish in neutral color, yellows, sages, grey. Buy good brushes! They are worth the investment in the finish you will get for them. Stay away from patterns in all things as they make things smaller.
