Yes!!! When we moved into the duplex that we are currently in, we found that someone had painted the porcelain tiles that framed the shower. There was also a ton of other problems with the paint in the bathroom but the peeling paint on the tiles had to go first. I scraped all of the paint off by hand and with a razor blade being careful not to damage the grout, and gave it just a light sanding to clear away the remnants and rough it up slightly. Next I used high gloss, white trim paint and sealed it with a layer of varnish. We've been here more than 4 years now and none of the paint is peeling or showing any wear at all. So, yes, it can be done and look fabulous!

There is a paint for everything nowadays. Just go on line and you will see how to do it, where to buy the paint, and all the steps it takes. Key in "painting ceramic tiles" in your search engine.

Yes, but if you plan to stay there for a long time i'd go with a professional.. they can spray it on and use a better product. It can be used the next day and looks amazing .Look for reglazing. The paint that we used ourselves did start chipping in a few years.

You can buy special bathroom tile paint which is anti mould and waterproof. It really doesn'r smell great becuase of the antimould chemicals. If I did it again I think I'd use a professional. We had to give it five coats of paint because of the exisitng pattern and the look. It would have ended up less expensive to retile and tilers don't charge that much. You can also buy stuff you can use to retile over old tiles. If I did it again I think I'd re-tile everything. You can buy cheap tile lots at auctions, and tile places sell out their expensive tiles, if they're over from a job, at really great prices. I got superb itailian tiles that were $100 a metre for $10 a metre from a tile shop. Just ask them if they have small lots of left overs. but they have to be special bathroom tiles. I was going to use marble for the floors but thank heavens a friend had already used marble and she said it was really easy to slip on. So I bought large long expensive marble (I did buy them as a left over lot) but they were still expensive, I couldn't use except on the walls and walls need so much fill to keep them in the right place. They end up with a gap at the top so you have to tile above the sight line.

What a great idea. We will check it out. Someone suggested marine paint because it doesn't peel. A lot of great replies coming my way and I thank you for yours.

I painted all of the grout in all of my bathrooms, on the tub walls and on the floors as well as the walls. I even painted the ceiling to match the grout. I did this about 10 years ago and the rooms all clean up nicely and still look as if we just did them. I used an exterior paint. So yes you can paint at least the grout!

If you are looking to keep the grout clean and to make cleaning the shower easier, you can apply a sealer over the tile and grout, but not this is not a permanent sealer and will have to be periodically redone. Now if you don't like the color of the grout or it has become damaged, you can remove the grout and re-grout the tile again. If you are looking to change the tile and grout color all together, then you can paint it and here is a link that should be helpful. http://www.todayshomeowner.com/how-to-paint-over-ceramic-tile-in-a-bathroom/

@LD Sorry Linda just got on this site and didn't press the reply button. That's a great idea but thank heavens I no longer own that house. I bought it to renovate but didn't realise the time and effort and cost in renovation and was trying to do a lot of it myself. This house the first thing I looked at was that I didn't need to renovate. But the money I made on the renovated house which gave me enough to buy one I didn't have to paint or redo kitchens or bathrooms.
