Here's a video tutorial on how to remove your old counters if they are the laminate type. Be sure to watch it all the way through is they first show how to remove the sink, which is something you'll need to do, but they don't talk about how the actual counter could be attached in that portion of the video.

Removing counter tops is not the faint of heart. Consider painting them to give them a new look. There are many products on the market. I have used this product http://www.gianigranite.com

Countertops are installed with a heavy-duty adhesive. You may end up damaging your cabinets trying to get them out.

As a retired builder they are installed different ways depending on how old the are,, and the type of tops they are. They could be nailed to the cabinets. You can take a pry bar and slide it under the counter tip and hit it with a hammer and then pull up on it easy, if the top moves then my guess would be that they are nailed. Thais is the way they were installed for a long time and depends on what they are made of a lot are still installed that way. if they are formed topes the will be glued to the cabinets and you might still be able to remove them the same way. Hope this helps.

My husband and I installed porcelain tiles over the top of our laminate countertops. It was very easy and I love it!

The easiest way would be to install your wood on top of the laminate with adhesive or cover it with that concrete skim-coat stuff. There are tutorials for that.

I have been looking into all sorts of changes for my counter tops and the one thing I have learned through my research is use your old counter tops to start with. Don't remove your old counter tops, use them as a foundation for the new. I recommend you read several different tutorials before you decide to remove your old counters. The one that has given me many things to think about and have learned a great deal from is homestoriesatoz.com The best of luck with your project.

Have it done professionally. It will cost you under a $1k to have new counters you like. Get estimates.

I had really ugly countertops in my apartment. Instead of asking the owner to replace, this is what I did. I had beautiful music note fabric and laid it out as the background. Then I "fussy cut" another fabric to scatter the musical instruments on top. I gave it 5 or 6 coats or so of Mod Podge (letting it dry between each coat). Once it was all good and dry, I bought a crazy good clear/epoxy resin and gave the countertops two good coats of that. Haven't taken any more recent pics, but my maintenance guy went in and put in a new sink, faucet and also caulked around all my edges. I think I did alright for a girl?!?!

Most counter tops screw on from under the counter.

When we bought our current home, the kitchen had solid surface countertops. When we moved in, we saw a long crack in the one corner (which had been covered up when we looked at the house). We couldn't afford granite, and saw a stamped concrete booth at the local Home Remodeling Show. They explained that they could do any surface we wanted, so we had them cover our old countertops. They "painted" the concrete on, and we love the look. It's kind of rustic, even though the house isn't. We were able to choose any color we wanted. We chose a medium "chocolate" brown. The pictures don't show up as dark as it is, but you can see the "texture" they created when applying it.

Was it a cement company that did this? Did they come in and do it at your house?
  • GAyle GAyle on Oct 13, 2015
It was a stamped concrete company that did mostly driveways and patios, and am the did come to the house. About a third the price of granite.

There's lots of fun crafty things you can do, just depends on you. Cover them or completely take them off, and if there tile or wood with Formica. Sounds fun!

U do not have to take them off if u want to do cement. Just cement over them. It is a time consuming job so allow urself the time. And the concrete colors are a little spendy , apx 6$ a 2oz, container.
