Can I paint faux wood-grain, thermofoil faced cupboards?

My manufactured 1998 home here in Northern NV has a plastic-like thermofoil fake wood-grain on cupboard faces and inside throughout the whole house. They even used wood-grain tape on butts and mitered joints. I was planning to use TSP to clean off the dirt and grease. I would like to leave the wooden doors as-is and are planning to painting the counter tops faux chocolate marble (like the bathroom). I am stumped as to what color for the face. What color, dark counter = lighter cupboards? I also have glass doors on the dinning room side of the open divider and large island and future wood flooring so I kind of want to break up the "wood" mode a bit. The wall will be a warm cream. More photos tomorrow...

Yes. For best results, clean with TSP, (trisodiomphosphate), sand lightly, use a bonding primer, and an enamel, kitchen/bathroom paint. For added protection use a clear, non yellowing polyurethane, sealer.

I like your idea of cleaning with TSP for grimy areas. For counter tops consider this http://www.gianigranite.com. Please post pictures of your work. Good luck.

@Nblunt ok got that. So my opinion at this point is to go lighter on the floor, then choose a light wood against the vanity top.Later when all said and done should you desire pop the bathroom with towels and rugs. I did that with both of mine.

If you use Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, you won't need to do anything - no primer. You should clean well first. This paint work on everything but don't use it on kitchen or bathroom counters. I've painted wood, leather, metal & glass with it. Kate

Lowes sells a wonderful bonding primer! I also have a manufactured home and painted my "wood" doors and kitchen cabinets white. I tried kilz and it peeled right off. What worked for me was washing with TSP- rinse with clear water - lightly sand and wipe with clean damp cloth. one coat of bonding primer and one coat of gloss paint with primer. I let each coat dry over night before rehanging and replacing doors. Good luck!

I am so sorry. I just wouldn't want the same time happen to someone else that happened to me. I used bullseye 123 that was supposed to stick to slick surfaces. Primed 3 doors front and back and painted same doors they " dried /cured"for several weeks and the paint and primer peeled off if it was barley bumped or a finger nail scratch it would peel it was a mess to clean all that off the doors. Of course when you want something to come off it doesn't. Be sure to do a test area that will be easy to strip if necessary. I hope you can find something that will work.

We actually painted our manufactured home fake-o cabinets last month, and we were shocked at the results! I did not sand the surface because our cabinets are old enough that they were not "slick" anymore. I bought a chocolate brown paint & primer all-in-one, just because I don't have a lot of time to devote to projects. The intent was to paint the cabinets in a flat color, however, as I applied the first thin layer of paint, I began to notice that the grain print coming through the new paint made the cabinets actually look like real wood! Needless to say, I stopped at one thin layer! Just make sure you brush out the paint thin. For the cabinet doors, I did lightly sand those down; probably all of the finish had already worn off. However, I used the same method. Then, I put an OIL BASED polyurethane on top. The oil based will not become cloudy when it gets wet.

TSP is listed as one of 9 highly toxic old household products by This Old House. http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh/photos/0,,20495627_20965377,00.html I suggest you use Klean Strip TSP Substitute. It still does the job and is healthier for you and the environment. Do still be careful while using as it can irritate the skin and eyes.

I've found Zinsser Bin to be very successful, but I'd definitely test patch somewhere first. I've used it on plastics and wood with no problem, let dry, paint (and seal, if required)on top.

I'm wondering if I could paint my white ceramic tile kitchen floor? My whole kitchen is white and the floor could use some refreshing. Any ideas?

Hi, go to youtube.com and search for Annie Sloan tutorials. You would put 2 think layers of wax over the paint once dry and buff. My kitchen table is painted and waxed and if there is a stain, I just take mild dishsoap and water and it cleans right up.
