I have a very old 1972 bathroom.

Truth be told, I should have the whole thing re-done, but I can't before the holidays. Can someone suggest what to cover the walls with? They are uneven and just so ugly. Just painting over will not work, and I am no artist so the the "faux" thing won't work for me. Is there any kind of covering that looks decent??? Also, any comments on re-glazing a tub? Is it worth it? Thanks so much.

Ann, there is a paintable wall covering that works well over unsightly surfaces. It's original intended use was to cover over cracked plaster walls. Choices of texture vary and it's a pretty look.

I think the paintable wall covering is called anaglypta and is available in some stores, but you can easily look it up online. Comes in many patterns. All the designs are raised. I have used it a few times below a chair rail or for damaged ceilings. I don't think it comes prepasted however, so you'll need wallpaper paste. Relatively inexpensive. Not hard to do, just time consuming.

I have an old 1800's house and a lot of the walls needed work. Instead of re-doing them all, I opted to texture some of them with joint compound.

All you need is a large bucket of compound mud and a large flat putty knife. The walls should be clean and free of wallpaper, etc.

Scoop some mud with the knife and smear it on the wall. Go back over it in different ...»

directions, smoothening it out, picking it up and laying it back down....you can make different patterns with the mud. Swirls, ridges, etc.

Practice on a separate piece of dry wall until you can do the look you like. When your full wall is done, dry for at least 24 hours and then paint. It hides almost every flaw and looks really nice. Here is a photo that shows one of my walls.... Keep it thin .... thick patches can crack or break, and use a good quality compound.

For more info, google how to texture a wall, and you'll find a lot of ideas. This was not difficult to do.

Ann, If you choose to do the texture route in a bathroom, the humidity must be taken into account. Natalie has the right idea for technique. But you may want to consider using a texture medium instead of dry wall mud. It will hold up better to moisture. The best products and most knowledgeable staff are at the paint stores.

As far as the reglazing question, it may cost more than a new tub, but that simple comparison doesn't factor in the cost of plumbing and replacing the tile surround, etc. If the tub is old and beat up, it's probably worth it.

I paid $300 for reglazing an old blue tub to white. It is holding up beautifully and was well worth the $$

Hello Ann, I am from Montgomery County MD. I am in Fla trying to update this balcony stair rail. Unfortunatelly here we don't have the luxury of easly find a carpinter. Here they either do floors or railings. Unlike up north a carpinter knows everything. I am sure I will find someone evetually. Thanks Lena

How about foil Christmas wrapping paper. Decorate the daylights out of it with bows and all.... You can take it down when you demolish the bathroom for the remodel in January...:) Tim

i'm a huge fan of wallpaper, the Brits use it to cover up bumpy old walls all the time! There are some great modern pattern options out there (depending on your style). Some of my favorite sources are http://www.grahambrown.com and http://us.farrow-ball.com. The wallpapers today are much easier to put up than before.

Try the Italian venitian faux fininsh. It is made to look uneven. I had my bath tub reglazed with Miracle Method four years ago. This company does Disney and major hotels in Vegas. If it's good enough for them it's good enough for us. Go to their web site.......Good luck.....
