How To Take the "Blah" Out Of A Builder Grade Guest Bedroom

In my continuing quest to make my builder grade house look less builder grade (without spending a lot of money), the guest bedroom was the next room on the list.
It had a nice big window and a vaulted ceiling and it was a decent size for a guest bedroom...so it had good bones. It was just boring. I like color...so beige walls with a white carpet and ceiling were not going to cut it.
First step was to paint the walls with an ombre watercolor paint treatment. The ceiling was painted the same color as the top band on the wall so it all seems to flow together.

I also replaced the carpet with engineered wood floors...much easier to keep clean when you have cats and dogs like I do.
Next step was sewing some window treatments (thanks, Mom!). The original plan was to make the entire panel out of the cream-colored paisley fabric, but I didn't have enough fabric to make the panels as tall as I wanted them to be. So rather than abandon it altogether, we decided to add a stripe or blue-on-blue paisley at the bottom. In the end I think it's more interesting than the original all-one-fabric panel wold have been.
Since the room has vaulted ceilings, I wanted to add some height to the bed. My mother sewed the cornice and drapery panel installed behind the bed, as well as the matching bed skirt. I bought the duvet on clearance a while back and had been waiting for a chance to use it...it became the inspiration for the color scheme in the room.
Then I upgraded the lighting. I think every room should have some bling and some black in it. Since I didn't have much of either in this room yet, I used a black chandelier over the bed, and glued beads to the bottom of the swing arm lamps.
Since I also think every room that people are getting dressed in should have a full length mirror, I changed out the standard closet doors for mirrored ones. They also reflect light making the room nice and bright.
I try to keep most of the surfaces clear on the wall opposite the bed so that guests have a place to put their suitcase and spread out a bit.

And you can see one of my cats making full use of the bench when I don't have guests :)

I love your room and your baby just takes it all over the top! She's gorgeous! If I was to visit, she would be welcome. After all, it is her house.

Seems to me your mom did most of the work?
