Is there anything to do with a linoleum floor, while being on a budget? Also I can not take it up. Is there a stain or something i could get to change it, I love the very dark wood floors. Could I just put stain over my out dated floor?
this my old outdated floor.it also has spots like small tears.

I painted mine in August, as a temporary measure until I can cover it with a floating floor. I searched online and on this site for painting vinyl flooring. I used Zinsser BIN 123 red label shellac based primer (2 coats), porch paint (acrylic) ( 2 coats) and and BM stays clear (3 thin coats), because that is what I had around. I did fill scrapes and holes with wood filler. It needs to cure well (we walked with socks for a couple of days after it dried to the touch, and didn't wash it for over a week), and it is holding up okay--I haven't tried to move any appliances on it yet, I figured it wouldn't be that hard to repaint every year or so if need be. I just painted it white, I suppose you could paint it any colour you want. I had to do a touch up in the bathroom because someone dropped scissors on it before it cured. I just taped around the spot so we wouldn't touch it, and it doesn't show. Most of the paints dried fast. I respected the recoat times on the cans, and used fans. It would be best to do before going away for a weekend or on vacation, so it can dry really well undisturbed.

The floor is paintable but FYI by the time you do all of the prep and buy the paint and evertything else you need clearly it would more then just replacing the floor.

thank you so much i can do this
  • Z Z on Oct 13, 2015
Yep, it's doable and way less expensive than replacing the floors if you want wood. And yes, you could get a wood look by priming, painting a basecoat and then using a glaze and a wood graining tool, but that would be so much more work. Here's yet another Hometalker that painted her floors. http://www.hometalk.com/diy/paint/rooms/how-to-paint-outdated-linoleum-floor-159421

Have you looked at peel and stick vinyl tile that looks like wood planks. Lumber Liquidators $ .39 a sf. Around $1 a sf at Lowes Walmart etc . Painting a floor is a lot of work and if you don't get it right the paint may not stick. Especially in high traffic areas.

I have this same floor..can you use peel and stick without pulling up the old floor???
    • Charly Charly on Feb 12, 2017

Yes. You can put it right on top of the old floor as long as you clean it first.

I don't know about stain...but I know for sure you can paint it with porch & floor paint. Lightly sand, use a base color and then a second color to stencil something on it...or get the Martha steward paint tool that is a rocker tool that creates a wood like grain (it doesn't take much practice to get it right)..I'm guessing your floor is somewhat embossed...you could use different colors to mimic a wood parquet floor pattern or just use the faux "grout" lines as your guide for your "lines" between faux patted board design. you can buy a piece of cheap linoleum at big box stores that have a similar embossed pattern to test out design and colors before doing your floor. You will want to overcoat the final painted floor with Varathane UV protected satin poly (several coats) to protect the painted surface from scuffs... f you like the dark floors, I would recommend a dark brown first coat and then use a dark brown 2nd coat with the glaze to paint (1:3) to create the wood grain with. What happens is when you rock the tool in the glaze/paint the pattern created exposed some of the paint color below in the grain pattern and leaves the field in the 2nd coat color. Super easy and amazing! You have alot of options here...all products for this size floor should be around $150.

This looks like an old Armstrong vinyl flooring which, when new, was one of the more expensive vinyls you could buy. The very thought that, even after 30-40 years, you could do better by putting any kind of peel and stick junk over it and be happy with the results, is just ridiculous. Flooring is a very specialized trade and I would only recommend getting professional help in replacing it. Otherwise throw down a nice big rug.

couple of thoughts. The first is that you probably need to be sure there in no asbestos in it. If there is asbestos then no scrapping sanding etc. You can cover it up but nothing to get dust into the atmosphere. The second thought is, have you tried seeing if you could lighten it? There may be 40 years of dirty mop water down there a good cleaning might make the colours more palatable.

Vinyl Planking. Looks like wood flooring but is made out of a rubber composite. Can be cut with scissors to size. Cannot be damaged. About 1/2" thick. They will give you a sample. Take it home and try to scratch, cut, chop it up.

Lightly sand the floor and clean the floor thoroughly. Use a primer like kilz or zinnser. Then paint to match your decor with a good floor or deck paint. Your floor has an embossed pattern and it will come through the paint so you already have a pattern . Finally, put a good polyurethane coating on it in a satin finish. Make sure you allow it to dry completely between coats before you move appliances or furniture back onto it. This should last for years depending on the useage and care.
