Make A Stone Birdhouse

These stone birdhouses are a wonderful addition to any garden and they are easy to make. Please consider this as a starting point for your imagination. There are so many possibilities! http://www.empressofdirt.net/how-to-make-a-s...

I've got full detailed instructions on my blog with recommended materials but here's the basics:

Materials: Birdhouse base, small stones (I buy bags of them at the dollar store), funnel for roof, silicone sealant to attach the stones, wood sealer.

Steps:

1. Start with a base. Here I used an unfinished birdhouse but you can also use a wide piece of PVC pipe, a jug, teapot...Anything with a the right shape.

2. If you're using a wooden birdhouse, first treat it with a wood sealant so it will last outdoors for many years. ...»

3. Attach the stones using an outdoor silicone sealant (pick one that dries clear). Work from the bottom up so each row of stones rests on the ones below.

4. Add your roof and you're done!

More ideas: add a wee door; window boxes-create a whole fairy garden scene-; make the roof from moss or tiny cedar pieces or a folded licence plate...

I hope you'll share your ideas in the comments. Have fun!

PS: These birdhouses are intended as decorations only. See my blog for information on safe nesting boxes.

Time: 1-2 Hours Cost: $10-20 Difficulty: Easy

Turn an unfinished birdhouse into something wonderful. Here we used different colours of stones and funnels on top.

You could also make a stone birdhouse using a piece of wide PVC pipe or a jug as the base. Use what you have and make it unique! See my blog for a full mat...

Mark Lindloff In the instructions on the blog I mention that the first step is to consider how and where you want to mount them so an appropriate base is prepared first and attached the the bottom of the birdhouse before adding stones. I have mine on deck rails and another on top of a post in my garden. They are heavy but with the right hardware you could also hang one from a big, metal garden hook.

Jennifer V Birds may try to nest in them. The problem is, any nesting box a human offers needs to be cleaned out after each season to prevent the spread of disease from one group of birds to the next. Also, there are specific designs for actual nesting boxes to ensure they are safe for the type of bird using them. The wrong size opening or depth and predators can get in or young birds hatched in there can't get out (etc). ...»
Because of this, I block the openings on my decorative birdhouses (also keeps wasps from nesting in them) and use separate nesting boxes for the birds. Hope this helps!

Vicki Owen Yes, the same adhesive works with shells. Just make sure you work from the bottom up, so each new row of shells rests on the ones below. This way they won't slip and slide while the adhesive is drying. I hope you'll show and tell your project when it's done!

I was wondering if anyone else has ever had an issue with wasps building nests inside your birdhouses? I did and I'm wondering how to prevent it in the future.

Donna Barriga I block the openings to my birdhouses because they're just used for decoration. I also have nesting boxes which the birds use and I find the wasps won't build where the birds are active.

These are adorable! Thanks for reminding people not to use them as birdhouses. Birds really deserve houses that suit their needs, and not our needs for cute decorations. I would imagine with a metal roof and little ventilation these could become little stone ovens on a hot day. My first thought when I saw them was Fairy Houses! (as someone else noted) Why not give yourself over completely to fantasy and forget trying to justify them as birdhouses. Put little wooden doors on them and call them miniature houses.

Interesting! I wasn't aware that the "birds & the bees" don't hang out together, so to speak! Thanks!

I have a question about the adhesive you use? Is there one available that sticks the stones to the birdhouse like carzy glue would work? I'm using a weatherproff gorilla glue but it doesn't adhere quickly.

Susan Branum You need something thicker so the adhesive can really grab the stones. I use GE Silicone II silicone sealant (waterproof, outdoor, clear drying).

Perfect Melissa. Actually you wrote that initially and I missed it! Lol! Sorry! It's raining so hard here in Richmond today so I have laid out stones from our driveway to dry and I'm off to Home Depot for the adhesive! Enjoy your creations everyone!

A general tip about bird houses: do not use a perch. Birds do not need them. If you buy a bird house and for some reason there is a perch, cut it off.

Good tip Terry. I made this birdhouse for a cancer benefit this weekend and it was purchased for a young boy making a "cool" decoration for his room! Lol! Sweet!
