Refinish table top

Can anyone suggest a way to refinish this table top. I want it to stay stained not painted. This table came from Pottery Barn but the finish is chipping off and scratches very easily. Appears to be a thin layer of some kind of finish over veneer. Not sure. Any suggestions on how to make look good as new without changing the appearance would be greatly appreciated.

Home Depot carries a kit by Minwax that includes the stripping process, stain, and finish.

I WOULD DO COMPLETE TOP IN COPPER (TIN) TILES or A" SIZED TO FIT "ALUMINUM SHEET ( THAT YOU COULD POUND OUT WITH A HAMMER ---THIS WOULD GIVE IT A DESIGN THAT WOULD BE UNIQUE. or USE AN EPOXY AND GLUE COINS (PENNIES ) TO COVER IT IN .

If it's veneer I would recommend using caution with harsh chemicals that might effect the glue that is holding the veneer in place. I would probably start by sanding a bit to get a better idea of what your up against, then if needed I would find a mild stripper. Try to stick with the sanding. For a quick fix you can use a wood oil (like old english or orange oil) to clean it and it will hide the flaws.
