Try scattering around blood meal or hot peppers flakes.

Spray with a light coat of varnish.

I sprinkle cinnamon on my flower bulbs and the squirrels don't bother them anymore. I imagine it could work the same way. Also, I make hot sauce water and spray on flowers and bulbs. They hate that too.

@Cindie Thanks so much. I think I will add some cinnamon around my mums. Squirrels are chewing on the pot.

Okay, so I painted my design on the pumpkin. Varnished and sprinkled with cinnamon while it was still damp. I will let you know if the porch squirrel attacks it or not. Happy Fall.

I buy cheap can of pepper and from time to time sprinkle in the flower pots on my porch to keept the cats and sqirrels from digging in them. I also sprinkle around other plants in the flower beds to keep dogs from doing their damage. Dosen't take a lot just a light sprinkling.
