Douglas Hunt on Feb 25, 2013There are plenty of folks who garden in nothing but containers, Forestine. The biggest consideration may be water, and the quickness in which soil in containers can dry out. I don't think I would try tomatoes, however, in a deeply shaded situation. In general, vegetables want as much sun as they can get. Here is some good advice on container gardening from the University of Illinois extension service: http://urbanext.illinois.edu/containergardening/soil.cfmHelpful Reply

360 Sod (Donna Dixson) on Feb 26, 2013Just make sure you have some good permeable (draining) soil and drainage holes. Ad Douglas says, tomatoes don't care much for a deep shade, if you can give them at least 6 hrs sun they will be happier for it.Helpful Reply
