DIY Shelf & Coat Rack

I love having a mini mudroom at each entrance inside our house. I have a total of 3 of those now. :) I have 5 kiddos, & they have tons of stuff! By each door I have hooks, a storage bench & a basket or two to collect all of their belongings in. It works much better than the floor! haha! So we built this DIY Shelf & Coat Rack to help take care of all that stuff!
In the past year we added an extra living space off the kitchen in the back of our house. We have a huge patio door that leads to our deck in that room. It's the perfect spot to hang all their coats in the winter & store their shoes all the time.
Here’s the before picture. Can you spot my DIY Herb Garden (You can find that project on Hometalk, too,) outside the door? It’s now a strawberry garden. :) Anyways ~ I needed to add a spot right here to collect all their gear. Especially in the winter when they come in & out from the snow. This will be the perfect spot to hang all their coats, hats & scarfs.
You'll need a 1x8, 1x2 & some trim to fit your space. You can find a complete list of supplies over on my blog.
Sand your boards then attach your 1x2 to the top edge of your 1x8. We used screws & wood glue.
Next use wood glue to attach your piece of trim underneath your 1x2 shelf.
Clamp & let dry for at least 24 hours or so.
Using a stud finder we marked our studs & then using wood screws we screwed the shelf to the wall.
Caulk every crack & wood joint really well. Caulking makes a huge difference! Make sure you use caulk that can be painted.
After the caulk has dried. Tape & then paint with trim paint.
The last thing to do is attach your hooks. I found these at Hobby Lobby.
All done! I love this new space. :)
