Corner cupboards -dead space

Lo
by Lo
Does anyone have a good idea to use the worthless corner cupboards? These cupboards are so deep and unusable! The cabinets are custom made and are all built together. Replacement at this time is not an option, although I wish I could. We love the house which we bought 2 years ago, but these cabinets drive me crazy.

Is there a way to put organizers in them?
    • Lo Lo on Oct 19, 2015
@Janet Pizaro I wish there was. But, no there is only about a 1 ft. opening.

Not cheap, but years ago I added Rev-a-Shelf blind corner optimizer to a similar problem. It gave me many years of convenient storage and the new owners of the house love it too. The other product they offer is the half moon lazy susan. Don't live with wasted blind corner shelves. They can easily be made functional.

you can make a simple platform with a lip (kinda like a very short drawer) and put it on gliders or wheels. Put seasonal items on that platform and slide them to the back of the cabinet. When the season changes pull them out. It's not perfect, but it does use the space and you only have to access it 2x to get the job done.

I made accessible shelves, and tall storage. I not quite finished, but will take a pic. Hope it helps with inspiration.

I would find a tray (or cookie sheet) to fit and use it to slide things forward that are deep in the back. I've always maintained that people who design kitchens have never used one.

Just do further search on the web and I'm sure you will find other options.

if there is a room on the other side of the wall, I would open up the wall and put a cabinet door there. This way you would have access to the space from another room and use it for storage.
    • Lo Lo on Oct 19, 2015
@Myra Bamberger unfortunately my laundry room is on the other side...the back of the dryer!

so the only thing iI can think of is to store cutting boards and baking pans there, and hopefully maybe it would free up different space.

My Mom put a lazy susan in and stored her pots and pans on it. When we remodel our kitchen we are taking the corner cabinets out and putting in open shelves.

Exactly what I'm in the process of! Pics above. I have a lazy susan at our mountain home, what a waste of space, effort, time and money. IMO

Change the doors so that they r hinged together. Then u will be able to crawl in it if need be. I had my husband do this for me. I put large appliances such as crockpots, food processor, bread maker, electric skillet, ,etc. in mine. I love it I can hide them all yet have them close.
    • Lo Lo on Oct 21, 2015
@Jayne gerow There is one door and the opening is only about 12 inches. The only thing we have in there is the toaster!

I greatly recommend lazy susans on each shelf, as sturdy as you can afford. Lowe's, Walmart, Dollar General, Dollar Tree: they all usually carry these, and course, I'm sure you can find them online. I keep a ton of plastic containers on mine because pots and pans were too heavy for my susans. I wish I had more.

I am in the minority here....when first married I had cupboards that went way back in a corner and I kept my waffle iron, crock pot and things like that with the mixing bowls in front....put things in the back corner I didn't use very often. Now years later, I have built in lazy susans in the 2 corners of my cupboards and I do not like them at all....even with little ledges, things like plastic lids and containers and even cans fall off and naturally they are back in the corners so I am on the floor with a flashlight trying to reach the stuff. I think baskets or bins in your corner cupboards would work for you....Good luck. Thankfully I do not have lazy susans in the top cupboards.

@Pat - you are NOT in the minority! I have lived in 4 houses with the corner cupboard in different iterations. I have yet to find a good configuration for it. I've seen a set up with pull out functionality. I don't know if it would be any better than the lazy susans - you're absolutely right, stuff that falls off inevitably ends up in the way back behind the turning portions or jams up the turn. Watching this post with great anticipation.

Multi shelf lazy Susan . Will hold tons of canned goods etc
  • Pat Pat on Oct 21, 2015
My built in lazy Susan's, I do not like, have three shelves each....doesn't matter what shelf I put stuff on, stuff still falls off , even by spinning it very slowly, and the stuff lands on the side or in the back corner....even with a ledge on each shelf....I have canned goods on one shelf, plastic containers (the worst offenders) on the second shelf and the bottom shelf has taller bottles and some popcorn bowls. A pain!!

i got one of those cabinet but i just use it for stuff i dont use all the time. Right now have bowls and tea pitchers in mine

I should have been more clear. My Dad rebuilt my Mom's corner cabinets so they opened up wide and had a two tier lazy susan that took up the whole cabinet. Nothing could fall off, no where to go. She kept her pots and pans and small appliances there.

I moved out of state so I can't get a picture.
