Hostas are basically indestructible! I mow over them each year, usually after the first frost. In the fall is a good time to spread them out by separating them and adding to other areas

No you do not have to cut them.Just leave them be as they feed off the leaves for the next growing season.

I live in Northern Minnesota and we do cut them down- otherwise they get like a used wet tissue in the spring.

@Arlene Grebenc Yes maybe so ,but again remember hosts feed off the leaves during the winter.I address my hosts when the emerge in the spring.

After a heavy frost the hosta plant will turn brown. I leave them be and mulch them in with the rest of my plants

Mine are in a perennial bed and I just let them die back on their own. When the leaves turn slimy, I just gather them up and toss them. The plants come back beautifully every year.

TO ALL YOU HELPFUL HOSTA EXPERTS: I have an area in my yard (So Cal.) that is hard shade in the winter and partly blazing full sun in the summer. Will Hostas grow in this combo of growing conditions? I love how they look but I don't want to lose some of them as the sun exposure changes! If Hostas won't work, what else can take the mix of sun and shade but is still low growing? THANK YOU!!!

Hostas do not do well in blazing sun. They do best in the shade. I would suggest going to a local nursery and have them suggest plants for your situation.

Thank you, Lilli, for your response. I was afraid that Hostas wouldn't work and I will go to my local gardening store for other ideas...

Hostas will scorch in the sun. They do much better in the shade. You don't need to cut them back, but won't hurt if you do. I just leave mine and then clean up the debris in the spring. I do cut back any leaves that have damage so that they continue to look pretty.
