No ground wire

I am replacing a ceiling light that I bought at the Restore. It doesn't have a ground wire to attach to the ground wire coming from the ceiling. Can this be installed safely without a ground wire?

As long as the electrical box has a ground wire and conected to a screw in the box.Once the light is connected to the box it will be grounded as well.

It could be old BX wiring. Should have a small silver looking wire coming out and wrapping around the outer metal jacket of the BX. Might not see it unless you look very closely inside the connector. Or if you have access to the wire itself you should see just a small amount wrapped inside the grooves of the outter metal jacket. If this is the case it is grounded. What I do is take the green ground from the new fixture and just attach it to the back of the box using an empty hole with a new screw. Although unnecessary because the metal screws attaching the fixture to the box actually ground it. Your not alone. Lol. Most old boxes are like this.
