We're redoing our kitchen and want to do something other than paint the ceiling. It's very small. What is cheap and looks nice?

We did our ceiling n tongue and grove expensive, however plank wood painted white or a light color would be nice too.

I have done a kitchen ceiling in textured wall paper that looks like tin ceiling. You could also get actual tin ceiling pieces or the new plastic ones that look like tin ceiling. They are really easy to work with. I got mine at Lowes. The pricing was also good!

We did all the ceilings throughout our house in bead board. You can get what is actually called "plybead" which is thin plywood that looks like bead board on one side. It runs up to $30 for a 4x8 sheet for us but because of its size it really didn't take a whole lot of it to cover all of our ceilings and, as long as you know where the joists are in the ceiling, you can tack it up with a brad or finish nailer (or screws if you don't mind filling the screw holes) and then we just covered the seems with 1x4s. The ply bead has a tongue and groove on one side it doesn't create very many seems. And then we just painted it white :)

Try metal tiles for a different look. They come in different styles, sizes,and colors, and if it is a small area, it should be affordable.

we used textured paper (although it's thicker and sturdier than typical wall paper). It's installs like wallpaper; use a good paste. It comes in an off white color which you could leave as is (we did for our main rooms) and everybody and I mean everybody who comes to the house thinks we have plastered ceilings, it's that good. In the kitchen you could paint it to resemble old tin. TIP: if you're placing it over an existing ceiling with a dark color be sure to paint the ceiling first so if there is any shrinkage over time the seams won't be as noticeable.

Depending on your style of decor you can get these plastic replicas of old tin ceiling tiles at your local Lowe's or Home Depot. They are $15 a piece and you put them up with adhesive like liquid nails.
