Sit behind the building they are burrowing under with a 22 on your lap. That's what my dad does anyway😃

We tried everything, and not sure what did work, but they don't like the smell of mothballs or red hot peppers, this was what finally drove ours away, not sure which one, as I put both near the hole he was going in under our porch at the old house.

Here's a great link on how to deal with them. I like that they tackle it from the idea of what brought them to your yard/land in the first place. I believe in living in harmony when at all possible, but also feel that when a critter invades my home or land, I have the right to give them the boot. I prefer doing so in a way that's not harmful to the critter or the land. I see no sense in killing other creatures when there are ways to turn them away without harm. http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/woodchucks_groundhogs/tips/solving_problems_woodchucks.html?referrer=https://www.google.com/

@Lucy Leach unfortunately that didn't work for us. Hardware stores sell a product that smokes them out...It looks like a small stick of dynamite. We could not use it because the groundhog dug right near a gas line, but apparently it works well.

Their mounds pop up in the middle of my front yard and all over the back yard. It is dangerous to walk in the back at night as the ground is so soft where they are tunneling. I also mow the field and it makes for a very bumpy ride. When I hit a mound the dirt flies up in the air and I hold my breath until I get out of range. To top it off the neighbor dogs come over and dig for the pests so this causes me to have to buy dirt to fill in the deep holes. Do I sound frustrated....I am. I have 2 1/2 acres so have to drive my truck around, filled with dirt, to fill the the holes as if I hit with my riding mower I would be stuck as holes are so wide and deep. I would like to be rid of them anyway I can. (I have talked to neighbor, several times, about his two large dogs digging holes to get the moles and ground hogs.) My dad used to pull his truck up to mound and put a hose down the the hole and attach other end to his exhaust. A horrow for the humane society. Might try Lucy Leach's idea on some of them...but like she says, have to be careful if near gas lline in front yard.

We have them also. Drives my husband nuts. He bought moth balls to put in the camper to keep critters out in the winter.. Needless to say I didn't want a camper that smelled like moth balls! Now I know what he can do with them!!
