Removed a wall, need help with floor!

Ryan Ingerson
by Ryan Ingerson
I recently removed a wall to open up downstairs. The gap now between the hard wood is wider than the threshold and panel board. Besides the obvious bad cuts where the thresholds meet. I'm at a loss as to what to do to cover this gap between the hardwood and tile (without laying down a new row of tile that I don't have). Also I need to run a transition strip coming perpendicular into the threshold that I require advice on as well.
Thanks!

  • Steal wood from a closet to tie the wood together - as for diagonal joint maybe consider using a slightly different color as a highlight piece (as it appears that there are different colors & styles of wood)

Have you looked at trying to come close to the color of the tile since only a small amount under the board would show and you would only need a few tiles to cut and fill in, maybe you could come close enough to bridge the gap. Also re-staining the wood floors to match up the color would be nice, if in the budget, if not a board of darker color to mark the transition from one color to another. Hope you come up with some easy solution

I love the stone or tile transitions.

I agree with the other Becky and did a virtual of your room before scrolling down and seeing she had the same idea. I just grabbed some mosaic tile online in browns to match each of the woods and a bit of gray to pick up the tile color, but you can't really see the gray once it was resized smaller. Hopefully you can get an idea of how it could look in your home.

You could buy a wider board of the same wood type and make a new threshold to cover the transition area. My husband makes our threshold boards often by undercutting the part that covers the old floor and using a router to round over the edge. Then you could stain it to match the existing floor. You could either butt it against the tile side or undercut and router both edges.

Love Becky in Canada's solution. Normally not a fan of mixing too many products in a space, but her stone and tile solutions really look nice. Much better than trying to make something work in wood.

Wow Hometalkers are sooo creative! I would have just put a vinyl transition strip in the gap (the T shaped kind)!

My husband made all of our thresholds out of pine. Ripped a 2 x 4 to the desired size, then used a router to make the contours. Finally sanded and stained, and clear coated them. Sorry I don't have a picture, but they did turn out awesome. Good Luck
