Fruit & Suet Kabobs…for the Birds

Sure I could buy suet cakes, hang them in those cheap little wire baskets and the birds would be happy but what fun would that be…
I made two batches of suet seed cakes one from scratch…I boiled down hunks of suet from the butcher strained it and mixed in seeds ~ they turned out great! My second batch I cheated a little…I used store bought cakes (the cheapest ones I could find) melted those down and supersized them with extra seed and bits of fruit…they turned out great too!
I wanted fruit slice for my kabobs so I sliced up an apple and a couple of oranges and popped them in the oven for a couple hours at 200 degrees to dry them out…no fancy dehydrator needed!
Old jello molds were just the right size to make my cakes…I simply pressed the seed mixture into the molds, used a wooden spoon to make a hole in the center and stuck them in the freezer to firm them up ~
Once they were good and hard I removed them from the molds cut out the center of the oranges and was ready to assemble the kabobs…
I used sisal rope with a small terracotta pot as a topper for my kabobs tied a loop at the top for easy hanging, slid on the fruit and suet cakes ending with an orange and knotted the bottom to hold it all together ~ easy!
A tasty treat for the birds and a little garden art for me ~ win!

    Thanks for sharing, I love the look! Our temps don't get cold enough for suet until mid January, so will put mine out then. I know the birds love it!
