The soil isn't very good. Everything I plant seems to die. The only tree that I have been able to salvage is the crepe myrtles. Any suggestions on how to fertilize the lawn cost effectively? Not rich. Thanks for any help. I have a whole lot of trees I have bought from Arbor Foundation coming and I don't want to lose them once I get them in the ground!! HELP!!!

My best advice for you is to start with a soil test from Alabama cooperative extension. Here's your info: http://www.aces.edu/anr/soillab/ They can tell you what you need to balance your soil and grow plants. I thought I was doing all the right things with my veggie garden until I got my soil tested. Costs a few bucks, but it will save a lot of money in the long run. You can avoid buying a lot of fertilizer inappropriate for your site.

Since peanuts are a nitrogen-fixing plant, your soil may not actually be that bad, but, as Steve suggests, a soil test is the starting point. It will tell you what to do. Also, you need to make sure that you are going to be able to get water to all those young trees you are going to plant. Regular, deep watering is crucial to their getting established.

Don't know what trees you have coming in.but while you're in touch with the extension service get a list from them of native species that could satisfy the needs under which you made you first selection. Trees already suited to the particular soil and climate conditions of any region are more likely to be successful with minimum maintenance. Good luck and send us pictures.
